No christmas at all. We dont celebrate it as we dont think Christ died. He ascended before he could have died. It is to show piety and be pious and attone for sins and stuff liek that. Basically be good and remind ourselves that are still mortal and only exist due to the will of God.

Yeah, clearly... Well, it's very a good practice if one can keep it. It's a bit like Lent & Easter in Christianity. Well, that's not that strict, of course. You are allowed to eat a little three times a day, so anyone can keep that.
So, good luck. may your heart & soul grow stronger by this excercise

let me point that i'm very HAPPY to see that i'm not the only person fasting... today at school (i'm 12) there were only 2 of my friends that were actually fasting... sometimes i wish i could encourage my other muslim friends to do the same, but i cant go to their house at 5 in the morning! anyway... i bet i'm the hungriest, first of all because i too am fat

and i didnt get to eat this morning

i accidently forgot to switch the batteries on my alarm clock so i woke up at like 6 or 7...

i told my mom i dont care if i eat or not i just want to fast, and she told me the surah (the words we have to say to officaly fast) and i repeated... but still i am so stinkin hungry

anyway i cant wait till 6... well 6 somtin (cant member the exact time

) cuz we get to eat here in the US

anyway... i am proud to be a muslim and i am proud to see that my parents and i arent the only people fasting

Yeah, Islam was actually part of my 10th-grade social studies course (it had a name which I forgot and almost don't care to find out). Ramadan sounds like something I could almost endure if I'm careful. From what I remember, it is true that any person throughout this month does not have to go through if they have a good reason, such as pregnancy (You definitely got to eat enough then!), severe illness (IIRC), or being unable to find transportation to Mecca. How accurate was that?
Me, I'm very trim with a slight build. Up until recently, I was renowned for my fierce metabolism, and being able to stomache quite an amount of food for a youth, even up to three donuts (without driving my blood sugar through the roof). The thing is, I have been known to put myself through endurance test, so if I were to try something similar to Ramadan, I might be brave enough to undergo it. I like to prove myself to be very hardy (and not as wimpy as I may look to some people). Still, by the time all is said and done, I suppose I might almost look like, say, Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones back in the early 70s.

Well CM and D_E_N, I can honestly say you command awesome respect from me. Anyone who can do that, for their belief is worthy of it i believe. I am not religious, i don't have to do anything like this, and feel no loss because of it. And still I admire you. Immensely.

Actually the guys in norway have a hell of a time. Trust me.
Yes we do, but then again living on this reef it's Ramadan 24/7. While I'm out clubbing baby seals to death or gnawing the throat out of the last whale on the planet, my wife has to fight to protect our son from polar bears, killer penguins, rabid reindeer and Greenpeace. We have NO time to eat.

It was really great to see yesterday the thousands going to the Old city on the first day of Ramadhan. An inspiring sight.

I think myself and DEN are getting too much credit
Its good to see you at 12 are fasting. I think i started at 12 as well. My family in Pakistan well they started at 6 or 7. Us spoiled ones, me and my sister started later.
Fasting is not that difficult, atleast I dont think it is. As long as you keep yourself busy it is not that difficult. You are honestly giving me too much credit. DEN on the other hand deserves it. 12 is a young age to keep all 30 and full day fasts.
Galuf you are right. If you are sick you are not supposed to fast. If you have any illness you are not supposed to fast. If you are pregnant as well. Oh yeah if you are breast feeding and etc. Basically if you have kids younger than 3 the female should not fast.
Morlock you are really lucky. I would die to see that and visit jeruselum. Its a shame i cant. If i did, i couldnt go back home. Political stupidity
LMAO at the greenpeace comment. That was just hit the nail on the head.
DEN I know many people who dont fast. But i personally think it is their choice. I am personally a conservative muslim and most of my Pakistani friends are borderline extremists. I personally believe you should let someone else choose if they want to fast or not. Last year i fasted only 15 days out of the 30. I was basically lazy. This year i feel guilty for missing out the 30 so i am doing it and making up the rest of the 15 after ramadhan finishes.
But never force or bother your friends about religious obligations. If it doesnt come from the heart it is not worth it. As it is said "There is no complusion in Islam".

thanks but i dont think i deserve that much respect either, i started fasting when i was about 7 or 8 but the first time i kept all my fasts was when i was 11 (last year) but i don't deserve that much respect... well atleest i dont think i deserve it

anyway, i dont FORCE my friends to fast, i just encourage them to fast, jus like i encourage my older brother to pray after eating Ifthar (sorry not sure how its spelled

) and most of the time he actually listens to me, so i figured if i remind my friends to fast atleest once every week, eventually they will fast and both of us will get the good deed of it
anyway, i'm glad to see you are going to make up those missed days from last year

I once went ten hours without eating (actually it might not have been quite that long), not on purpose but because I was so into hanging out with friends, anyways going that long without eating made me faint. I can now handle going longer without food but not well, I start feeling really nasty. Yeah I wouldn't be able to handle fasting well at all that's for sure.

Good for you don't find it hard. I did have breakfast and I start to feel hungry now, and it's just 11 yet!

Is it appropriate to ask about this political background...? If not, just ignore me. I don't know much about it but would like to understand.

You are lucky, I think I might end up eating someone if I had to fast ten hours a day for a month lol. Actually I seriously would be a very very nasty, person after not very long. I am not sure I could even survive that long without frequent meals. As it is I don't feel like I eat enough.
What is Ramadhan exactly (besides a month)? Sorry if it was all ready explained, I didn't see.
