However, I would like some tests.

Okay, if you want to do some tests ... I'll also ask for the average, then, ok?

2D6
3D6+3
2D12+1
1D20+7
10D4+10

Now show me you have been a good student ... Image

Hey, Sleepy, welcome to this topic. It was bound that SOMEONE ( Image) showed up in this topic ... what's confusing you? Image

I've got the feeling that this topic is going to end up just like the 'Goody' topic.

Ahh but it was not started by me. it could never have the brash sense of malevolence that my thread harbours.

All this 2d4 etc, makes sense but once you have a higher level characters all the multipliers make the die almost obsolete.

Daemion: perhaps, but so far the topic actually appears to have content!

Sleepy: depends on how you perform the roll. If you roll 1D4, and then multiply the result 10 times, you get a different result than when you roll ten times a D4. In the latter case, yes, with higher numbers, the die itself becomes fairly obsolete, since there's a strong statistical probability that the result will be (near) the average value.

So 100D4 will most probably end up with a score of about 250, give and take a few numbers. You'll never see 100 (chance is 1/(4^100), which is about 1 in 1.6x10^60 -> consider the chance impossible), or 400 (same chance).

If you make one roll and multiply the outcome, though, in this case the result could be 100, 200, 300 or 400, each with 25% probability.

I got E in my GCSE's so don't push this mathmatical stuff too far Image

Read goody's most recent topic, air your views, then goody will have content Image

Oh and she is still freezing Image

Yeah, I must admit that the banner you mentioned is a bit ... weird, to say the least. It doesn't have anything to do with computer games at all for what I have seen, let alone BG!

Ok here we go:
2d6
-min 2 max 12 average 14/2 = 7
3d6+3
-min 6 max 21 average 27/2 =13,5
2d12+1
-min 3 max 25 average 28/2 =14
1d20+7
-min 8 max 27 average 35/2 =17,5
10d4+10
-min 20 max 50 average 70/2 =35

Isnt this right? I think it is..
If not, we can just do it all over again.. Image

Dont bring this topic out of hand!
I am the founder, and it is mine topic.
I am the ruler of this topic.
Just kidding..
But hey, use the goody instead will you?

That was a warning, next time I will send a Lightbolt through your body Image

Odin: that's five out of five correct! You DID understand after all! Image

It wasn't my doing that the other folks started to wander off topic ... apparently they can't follow this stuff as well as we can Image

Yuck, statistics. Never liked them, never will. All in all, the statistics doesn't realy matter and it's all about plain luck, and using Fireballs by a level 17 mage.

That's 15D6 of damage, save for half, if I'm right. So that's on average 52.5 points of damage, with 26.25 on a succesful save. Image

And just for the record:
The thac0 stuff and AC. the higher thac0 you have, the better, and the lower AC you have, the better?
Just to see if i have understood that also...

for your guys ...
lower thac0 = better
lower ac = better

I didn't read everything on this topic so someone has probably already pointed this out.

thac0 = to hit armor class 0, the lower it is - the better. thac0 is kind of like accuracy of your guy. (if it sucks, you can't hit water even if you were sitting in a bottom of a lake.) the better it is, the more often you'll hit.

eg. if your thac0 is 10 - and what you are trying to hit has AC of 0 you'll have to roll 10 or more (1d20) to hit.

=)

Heh -- question regarding Thac0 and AC...

In attacking eachother, [edited in]

Who is more likely to hit? Who will do more damage per round? Bonus: Likelihoods and expected values...

Thac0's given are fully equipped (Str, weapon, etc). For simplicity, both characters are proficient with 1 attack/round and have no damage bonuses. We'll also assume Character 1 can't be stunned.

Character 1:
Thac0 8
AC -8
Full Plate
Flail of the Ages

Character 2:
Thac0 6
AC -10
Full Plate
Celestial Fury
