Nay, west is Cloakwood Forest. But you can only get there, if you have cleared the Bandit Camp (Chapter 4). And you can only get to the Bandit Camp, after you've cleared the Naskel Mines

All of the forested areas in the vicinity of the Friendly Arm Inn are labeled on the main map screen. They are the Bandit Camp, Larswood, and Peldvale to the East of the FAI and four Cloakwood maps to the West.

*sigh* now i play BG2, I miss BG1 as it has no wilderness areas

I usually play Elven Ranger/Fighter, rarely any other classes, although I have tried thieves and fighter/thieves. Sometimes choose half-elves and halflings to vary but I'm the kind of person who can never decide which class to choose (BG2 is harder with all the kits & things..) and often I'll get quite far in the game, and then simply start another one with a different race or class. I stopped playing BG1 in ch7 as an elven fighter since I got BG2 in december but I'm sure I'll finish that game off sometime.

Hey, I know what you mean. I also started over quite some times, without getting really far. I first played with a paladin, then with a bard, then with a mage and now with a fighter. There was just always one thing that bothered me a bit, be it because of class or skills; I guess that I can be a very picky person.
Though I believe that with my half-elf fighter, I will finally get further in this game. I hope...

I've always enjoyed playing a male fighter specializing in sword/shield style, since Varscona is such a great weapon. I keep starting over with new characters too, though, and I get most of them through the Nashkel Mines and stop to try someone new. It's funny how well you get to know the first few chapters after playing them ten times in a row.

Though the spoken dialogues and movies started to get on my nerves, so I always skipped most of the talking. It's nice however, how you learn all the cool hidden places and doors that you may not notice the first few times, and which can wield some cool treasures or interesting persons.

It's always fun testing different characters, b/c you get different dialogues and reactions from people due to aligment/charisma/gender. BGII is really fun to simply walk around and talk to folks in, b/c of their different reactions to all sorts of differences in party class/gender/charisma/alignment and individual characters.

I have completed the game with these chars and some more

Human Ranger, CG. With the Dagger of Venom and hide in shadows he deals a lot of damage even if he doesn't backstab (specially to wizards) and he has a lots of health and a good bow. Good in both power gaming and roleplaying perspective.

Elf Ranger/Cleric, NG. With tomes of wisdom he is really too overpowered! Good power gaming but he is also a good RP char. Worshiping some halfling gnome of woods or something.

Elf Conjourer, CE. Really powerfull, really fun, although not the best RP coice.

Elf Fighter/Thief, TN. REALLY TOO DARN GOOD. F/T are so god darned broken! Backstab with 19 strenght and Sword of Backsatbbing is totally out of here. Very fun indeed!

And I have played soooo many dual-classed characters and I have also finished the game twice with Elf F/M. But I'm too tired to write anything about that....

I just started playing as an Elven Fighter/Thief after I realised how fun it was playing with Coran with the Shadow Thief armour Having a lot of fun at the moment, but I've never really used backstabs until recently and I'm just trying to get the hang on things. Do you have to drink invisibility potion or use a spell to be able to backstab during a battle?

During a battle, yes, and you have to be behind them. Before a battle you can hide in shadows, go up to them, and then backstab them.
