Heh, I don't know of any person who would be so apt to be a wolf as you
Then one day out of the blue, he trotted up behind me and licked my hand.
The myths about wolves are horrible because they surprisingly, still seem real to some people who hold an irrational hate towards the wolf. In Sweden, the wolf has long been an endangered species, there are only about 100 wild wolves left, and new wolves have been imported from Russia and Norway in order to avoid inbreeding. The wolf is now a highly protected species, but still some laps and farmers in the north of Sweden, kill wolves illegally and claim it was in self defence. It should be noted that the last recorded wolf attack on a human was in the early 19th century.
Wolves have attacked hunting dogs about 3 times in modern history, and sometimes it happens that a wolf may attack sheep or reindeers. There are about 20 000 laps in the north of Sweden who live partly off reindeer, and they get ?5 million from the government each year if they have wolves close to their villages regardless if the wolves take a reindeer or not. This arrangement is because previously, the laps got finacial compensation for each dead reindear which was problematic, because the number of dead reindeer they could show, was far smaller than the number they reported. Typicall the a lap villages would report that 140 reindeer was killed by a wolf, whereas the Nature conservation council who trace all wolves with electronic equipment, and has wolf researchers everywhere in Sweden where the wolves live, had not seen a wolf in the area for several years. This kind of conflicts led to the laps feeling discriminated against, and the government to increase the amount of money they get. So in an attempt reduce the hate against wolves and minimise the illegal killing of wolves, the goverment started with this permanent financial compensation. In addition to this, the village gets 50 reindeer from the government for each wolf, wolverine or lynx that lives in the area. If a new wolverine or lynx is born in the area, they get 200 reindeer, and if a new wolf is born, they get 500 reindeer. This sounds like an excellent deal to me, but many of the older laps claim that wolves still kill hundrereds of reindeer they don't get compensation for, that the wolves always attacks the best reindeer and thus they compensation should be based on what the best reindeer is worth, not an average sum, and also that the wolf packs will hunt reindeer over mountain cliffs so that hundreds die at once because they fall off the cliffs. Wolf researchers from the Nature conservation council living in the area have debunked that the wolf would behave that way and also note that there have been no remains or even photos of these claimed events, but these researchers have actually been threatned and needed police escorts. So, you can see how totally infected the situation is for the few remaining Swedish wolves.
Wolves are shy and fear humans, so although I've spend many childhood summers with my relatives in the north of Sweden, I have never seen a wolf in the wild here in Sweden. Only in Russia, once. He was standing in the middle of the road, watching me, but he ran as soon as I approached.
