Totemic druid is very cool because his spirit animals are very good (lasts 60 rounds, very strong and only 16HD elementals and pit fiends are better summoned monsters then them in the game). Also I should tell that spirit bear's weapon is considered +6, others are +5! Spirit wolf's attack permanently drains 4 level and spirit snake's attack does same damage as assassin's poison weapon. Spirit bear's attack causes horror (save vs. spell) and spirit lion has 20 dex (AC -5). Good AC (0 to -5), HP (70~95) and TACH0 (1 to 5). IMO, shapeshifting is not that good except greater werewolf from shapeshifter.

I wonder. Do most ppl make characters in terms of abilities and stats or do they create a character with some image in mind? I think if someone wants to just beat a game then they make a character with the best ratio of benefits to hinderances, but a real RPG gamer will make a character in terms of some personality or image of a person. Sure everyone wants to have the best stats possible, but the character shouldn't be made in terms of "well he gets +1 to hit every third level, but if I make this character I can I will be able to use Carsomyr..."

I agree with you
It would be very nice to have mental images of personality and/or image of PC. I played BG2 for about 3 times (chaotic good male fighter/cleric, lawful neutral female sorceror, neutral evil male swashbuckler/fighter) and now I play a human male neutral good ranger with attributes as close as my real ones (I also loved being ranger). Perhaps it's not best PC (he has only 15 in his STR, DEX, CON and 13 in CHR), but I'm involved in my PC deeply since I feel my PC as an emulation of myself in BG2 world (ie. what pc's doing in BG2 could be what I could do
). I think that's the heart of RPG games (character development) but that's just my opinion.

Hardly a legal class combo... A good one, though, considering elves' bonus with the long sword and their high dexterity.

I also agree with hung long because I would never use a character that isn't like me.

My sorcerer is a belter...kept and saved for the continuance
My Cavalier doesn't stink either, but not to prefer when the mana goes hot
My third char...a measly triple class char, but with no reasons in this topic, he is the funniest to play !

In my experience
1.Totemic Druid or, even better, Fighter dualed to Totemic Druid (available only with little help of SK, though);
2.Ranger/Cleric (most useful is Ranger2Cleric);
3.Blade;
4.Fighter/Mage (Fighter2Mage preferably);
5.Sorcerer;

I always go for my Berzerker/Cleric.
Once played a paladin, and it was too boring, to play as good wont work, and the above class has no weaknesses really (as ranger/clerics do), and i dont want another mage , that casts lotsa spells, i prefer to use him in the frontlines with one or 2 spells at most used on him.
Ranger/clerics and Paladns might be good, but they cant be evil. On the test someone made bfore i got Neutral evil, just like my character is, so Good sucks

1. Monk (how cool is punching someone for 70+ dmg)
2. Beserker
3. Sorceror
4. Archer
5. Ranger/Cleric
Those are more my favs than best. I dont think there really is a "best" class.

1. Assassin - knocking off a tough opponent with one hit is an amazing site! (having 6-7 250 point traps is cool too)
2. Plain Ranger - having him dual-wield, hide in shadows, and cast clerical spells, i think, makes for a great RPG character!
3. Undead Hunter - as he can't be held or lose levels in a fight, i can count on him more than anyone else in a party. (nice saving throws also)
4. Archer - when I need that critical hit to disrupt a spell or finish someone off, this guy brings it!

No such class as the best class. the best class is the one you enjoy the most playing. but, while I am spouting the litaney that half a dozen or so posters have given to newbys
OH my friging god, I need a social life!
nope, since my surgery, I am home bound and spending a lot of time healing,
sorry, too easy to lose track after several brews...
any way, the wrinkle I hope is the supposed fact that this game is beatable from any class, supposedly, either solo or with a party.
At least that is the way I heard it, just about everyone has seen solo with totemic druid?!?
tough!
and not even multis, which is hard at the beginning but evil at the top end, but the way you enjoy playing.
I am a pure power cheater from all my games, the games I enjoy best are the ones I can hack to death, and bg 2 has some good editors. I enjoy a game I can stretch out of recognition, and I need a pshrink cause this is my natural profession talking, and like a lot of the gods out here are obviously programmers. They enjoy editors, and creating happy script or actually have the time and effort like xyx to create the very well done spells guide.
OH crap, I am a pshrink! I forgot, that is what I was originally planning to do with life???
Oh well, I am good at acidic commentary and enjoy the closest game hack, some trick to get what you want by changing behavior...wait, I work with networks and servers, and I enjoy the most the hacking portions of the game????
So what do you do in real life? That might partially give us a guess at which portion of the game will appeal to you the most, I enjoy hacking, and my last job before my stint in the place o sick people, waas mostly required a type of mind that actually enjoy hacking past security...
naturally, due to non disclosure I cant say anything more.
no it was not with law enforcement of any type.
Actually its pretty clear what you like, but only after you realize you may be mistaken about your self view and actually take a look at your cd rom shelf.

opps, for got to post my opinion! oh crap, too much brew, I typed that letter! without pitching my opinion of the best class! me bad, must get glass of water and something to eat!
Sorc, obviously. the way I see a magic class, the pure sorc is still the best. a fewer spells, but more slots, and slots count when you're facing a 40 ton phlogen powered big red....
phlogen is the mythical element of fire, and supposedly red dragons breath it.
seriosly, all you need is the solo sorc, which supposedly is or one of the easy ways to solo thru the game.
I frankly enjoy everything about the class except the limited number of spells. I think my next game I will enjoy this game even more and play legit, instead of being greedy. to be blunt, my spell selection is quite different than most people, cause all you get is the ones you actually use, and I have read too many posts to count about spell selection. no other class captivates me so, and I play an uber summoner, all battles except a few involve massive summons.
To a magic is fun type, the sorc is the fun one.
Tho, it would be fun for me to play one of the multi classes I have ranted into death...f/m? t/m?
naaaahhh....
not a dual assin mage!
xyx is rihgt tho...
a high level dual is actually very very powerful.... I can see xyx chuckeling right now, but if I did a multi class, I might actually carefully look up the tables for a high assassin mage dual.
I think this class is legit, yes or no?
more likly I might try mage thief, with the assassinate skill and use any item, the trick with scarlet ninja to and kundane, Will actually have to try out with a new game... actually I have been defecting to mechcommander 2, which i got for birth day.
9/11, sucky, no?
yeah, but to me the least fun way to spend any time in the world is preparing a list of spells to be ready for the nest day.
I prefer knowing my selection is ready and waiting,
ready to be blasted to nearest dragon or undead scum, with really bad graveyard breath! YUk!

Ehh, ok UserUnfriendly, sure, sure. Just lie down and take it easy. Will someone keep him occupied while I call for the guys in white!
I don´t see alot of archers in this post. I tried bg1 and icewind dale with a pretty standard party (tanks with mage and cleric backup and a multi thief on the side) and frankly, life has been much easier since I got myself an archer and equipped all of my characters with some sort of missile weapons! Most enemies don´t even get close!!
By the way, I´m totally for the "play-the -class-you-like" philosophy. This is the origional idea of rpg and should always be the deciding factor when choosing a character. Of course, it just so happens that alot of people LIKE mto play powerful characters.....
