Never till the end? But then you don't see the endings for each town!
... plus the added bonus of the various effect you can cause. Blind, Knocked out, Crippled body parts etc....
Is there an 'Instant Death' critical? Sometimes one hit to the head seems to kill and the critical hit text says something like "He died instantly". If so, will only head shots do it?

Depends on what you call "Instant Death" critical.
One shot kills are very possible, especially with aimed shots.

if you read the manual, page 132 in mine, it says that:
"Instant Death - Some critical hits are just so brutal the target is instantly slain, usually in a very spectacular maner."

Instant Death criticals tend to take you several hundred damage points past where death would occur. You normally explode or end up in a bloody pile of goo rather then flesh and bones where you once stood. The tend to be around 250-450 damage and you do die spectacularly. Just try running up against Enclave guards with no armor at close range and see what I mean! ;)

I made a few weird instant death shots. The guy had 110 hp and the damage was just 100 but he died with that one shot. Weird.

About that HtH Char

I have Made about 3 HtH chars and i think it´s best Damage dealer class. It surpasses Energy weapons and Big guns easily. This is all thx to Perk named Slayer it makes melee and HtH attacks critical and Mega Power Fist is important too... so you do about 100 dmg every blow and with some traits and perks u hit 6 times in turn. so u can easily kill 6 guys in one turn in start it´s pretty good that u dont take more than 6 str. u ca get 3 when wearing power armor and one from that chip that is used in Brother hood of Steels base in San Fran. I Definetly say that everyone should try this out because it´s so great...
i easily defeated Horrigan and the turrets with this build...

I use Gifted and Sex Appeal :D

Str 4 + 1 (module) + 4 (advanced power armor)
Per 7 + 1 (module)
End 10
Cha 8
Agi 8
Int 8 + 1 (module)
Lck 2

Traits: Gifted /// Sex Appeal

Skills: Big guns /// Speech /// Lockpick (Later Tag! with Energy Weapons)

Perks: Awareness /// Magnetic Personality /// Kama Sutra Master /// Bonus Rate of Fire /// Living Anatomi /// Tag! /// Action Boy.

I Choose low strenght because even though you need a more strenght than 4 to use most weapons, i manage to kill enough evil dudes to survive. That is probaly linked to my high Endurance, and many Hit Points. a Charisma of 8 is enough to get you 4 party members, and with Magnetic personality you can have 5, which is maximum. 8 Agility is also more than enough Action Points... But i also choose Action Boy anyway ;) . High Intelligence is needed if you (like me) want to raise some of your skills that are NOT Tagged.

Actually instant death criticals are not linked to damage any way at all. I killed for example the boxing champion at New Reno with single punch in the eye, which didn't do any damage at all. He still dropped dead. :D
I've also killed deathclaws and aliens countless times with single haymaker punch, even if I scored only 3 points of damage (and they had maximum 200+hp's before the hit).
I'll paste my character later. Playing unarmed character (using only my fists and legs, not those clumsy power fists). And soloing of course. Have to say, there's no problems to get along with a pure unarmed character. And I haven't even maximized my character.
Usually I can kill any enemy with a few punches, no matter the damage I score. Luck 10, finesse, better criticals etc. Just reached Navarro at lvl 18.

OMFG! I did it again. I started the whole game from the scratch (this was maybe 6th time) and I was at level 18 already. I just can't be satisfied with any characters and I always get these "great" ideas.
OK. I wanted some challenge, so I decided to tweak up a little my unarmed char just to get along a little better. I decided to play the whole game through without even once touching any weapons, including unarmed weapons (power fists and such). Top of that I won't hire any henchman, I'll do this one solo. And the difficult settings will be of course set to hardest, though I have no idea, will they actually make things any different.

So my brand new unarmed champion looks like this:
STR 8 (Power armor grants str, but I want it earlier. And Slayer needs 8 too..)
PER 8 (need sequence badly)
END 5
CHA 2
INT 8
AGI 10 (I know there's those modules, but I dont like waiting)
LU 6

Traits are:
Heavy Handed and Gifted

Tags: Unarmed, Sneak, speech

Perks will be:
Bonus HtH Damage (2)
Bonus Move (1)
Dodger
HtH Evade
Better Criticals
Slayer

Or something like that. I don't even try to get critical chance high, cause even now they are quite common, when I hit in eyes. And slayer will boost it up in the end.

And now to my mad idea, which will be some kind of nightmare:

Pure non-combat character, which is good at all educational skills. So I can finally complete those quests, which need some unusual skills and get to places I haven't seen before (Toxic cave elevator f. ex).
I try to play as far as possible without even one attack. I have some plants to succeed that, but it will be hard. Stats are straight from hell :)

STR 2
PER 2
EN 3
CHA 10
INT 10
AGI 10
LUCK 10 (for random encounters)

I wont wait for those modules.

Traits:
Jinxed (I have to test this finally), Gifted

Tags:
Science, Repair, Speech.

At least these Perks:
Explorer (I want to get them all)
Swift Learner (multiple levels I quess)
HtH Evade

My plan goes:
I gather few talented henchmen to deal with the unavoided fights. With HtH evade, agility 10 and spending 0AP I should be quite safe, even if my hp's are low.

This is maybe the graziest game so far and I've tried all kind of things :)
Still, it's definetely worth trying.

HtH Evade is an enormus AC booster, unarmed/12 + any unused AP*2.

It sure is. Have to say Jinxed is pretty refreshing choice. I've laughed my head off alredy couple of times, when those poor geckos hit their own arm off or knock themself out :D
I wonder does my luck affect also to my henchmen luck? At least Sulik hasn't got a critical failure even once. Only few fights behind though.

Risky business

my first dozen characters where all gifted, and not much different than the snipers posted here.

However, taking the Skilled optional trait without taking gifted makes a significant change. That's ten more skill points every level than you would get with a gifted character.

My skilled character went as follows:

Str: 6 = 10 With Power Armor
Per: 1 = 2 With Mod Chip
End: 6
Cha: 6
Int: 10
Agl: 10
Luck: 1

Optional Traits: Skilled and Jinxed

Tagged Skills: Unarmed, Speech and Sneak

Perks: Level 4: Quick Pockets
level 8: Educated
Level 12: HtH Evade
Level 16: Bonus HtH attacks
Level 20: Silent Death
Level 24:Living Anatomy
Level 28: Action Boy
Level 32: Dodge
Level 36: Action Boy
Level 40: Mutate! I replaced Skilled with Heavy Handed. I figure that since I don't want to rely on critical hits, I might as well take it to the next level.

That set me up to a grand total of +10 to my max melee damage (+15 against living critters) and it appears that this damage is multiplied by 2 when I attack someone from behind in sneak mode. 20-56 damage with the old Mega Power fist, or 40-112 if I am behind them (not bragging, I really don't kill things very fast, because criticals are rare for me, and not very good when I get them, plus everything has damage resistance).

This is bragging: If I use every action point, my AC is 75. If I don't take an action, it goes to 99. Ouch, how's that for a little Hand to Hand Evasion?

I ended up with 400 more skill points than a character with an intelligence of ten and the gifted trait (40 levels x 10 extra skills per level), and 64 more than a character without Educated (a total of 1304 skill points throughout the entire game). Let's not forget that gifted cuts 15% off from EVERY skill you have as well. And at level 42, a normal character would have 14 perks, but I only have 10. Really though, do those 4 matter?

I found this character to be very enjoyable and a nice change of pace.

I know I could have beat the game much earlier than level 42, but I like to wander the wastes.
