I voted for classic beacuse I thought that it would also cover classic rock,
So is "classic" supposed to cover all music from Hildegard von Bingen to Bruce Springsteen, except for jazz? Seems kind of meaningless to vote then.

I voted Rock n Roll.

Its funny that people voted classic, taking it to cover "classic rock". Rock n roll technically is the old classic stuff like Bruce Springsteen ;)

The 'modern' rock you refer to is generally punk, emo, indy etc and various other spinoffs :o

NOT Rock n Roll, a true connoisseur should recognise the differences ;)

I try to keep up in the modern music scene, but time and again I will return to the old classics. Since they're time-tested and approved :D

I voted for classic, thinking it meant classical. Guess we need to be a bit clearer: which is it?

It might make some sense for this poll to have multiple options. I don't have a "favourite," there are various kinds of music I enjoy equally, it is all mood dependant in terms of which I listen to.
I don't like jazz a whole lot. but I like most of the Classicals.
I like a lot of jazz, both "classic" like Duke Ellington and Lester Young, and contemporary like Keith Jarreth and Roy Hargrove, or even acid jazz. I also like a lot of "classical" music meaning the Western academic music tradition including symphonic, opera and chamber music. Since the term "classical music" covers about 700 years of music from all over the Western world, it is easy for me choose it as the cathegory of music I like the most from the very limited options this poll covers. However, if you include "classic rock" such as Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen and other typical rock music, I would not vote for "classic" since I find most conventional rock music quite boring.

In any case, even if "classic" is taken as meaning "classical music" as I defined it above, the groups are not really comparable. To be picky with terminology, I think classical, jazz, popular music and folk music are comparable cathegories, whereas rock'n'roll, metal, techno, R&B and pop, all are genres that belong to the broader cathegory popular music.

I'd have to agree with that 100%, personally - there's not but a few styles I don't enjoy, it just varies from week to week which one is chosen. I'd guess most everyone is that way.

That said, I'd definately have to choose "jazz/blues", though. Give me Bird or Dizzy any day of the week, and the more modern styles of Jazz and Blues can really make you look at phrasings and improv in a whole new light. :)
I sincerely wish we could re-consider this plan from a perspective that involved pants.

I think CE is right on the money. Classic used in the sense of "something timeless" is basically a marketing tool to lull your sensibilities: "Hey, kids, you love Artists A, B and C, right? Who doesn't! Well, here are some equally classic artists and all their classic recordings, and here are more classic recordings you never heard before from artists A, B and C, and it's all only $99.95 plus you get this Ronco Head Blender that slices, dices, and destroys all thought processes..." Anything and everything is classic. ;)

Classical music would be my favorite genre, largely because, as CE points out, there's 700 years or more' worth of music, in many different sub-genres, styles, moods, orchestrations, etc. Second, I'd put jazz, with an emphasis on be-bop and hard-bop (though with a greater stretch in all directions, including modern third wave back to ragtime). I like rock, but far too much of it IMO is just an industry. I've consistently preferred the edge of that.

METAL
I'm not a typical metalhead though, so no leather and boots :D It's not like I listen to every kind of metal and such. I only think that IRON MAIDEN is the band that kind of changed the world with its music! I always find something new in their tracks, no matter how many times I have listened to them. Seems I can never get enough of that music. And Bruce's voice... *sigh* so yeah, I voted for metal.
