This is a great skill (against spellcasters only).
I prefer to put points in Detect Illusion rather than in trap skills... simply because I think trap-laying is a too easy way to kill enemies... but as a Soloer, you may want traps
You beat me to the punch....lol.

I don't have much exp with dual classing. After I dual to thief from kensai, will I be able to wear thief armor? Or am I stuck not wearing any armor at all? (because of switching from kensai)

@cuchulain - you can backstab with any weapon thieves can use. thieves cannot use staff of the magi with UAI. You cannot backstab with the staff of the magi, it is impossible.
@malykor - when you dual, while you are a thief you will be able to wear thief armours. when your inactive class reactivates (ie: you can use your kensai abilities again) all the kensai restrictions apply (no ranged weapons, no armour) but also the kensai bonuses (fighter THAC0, more attacks)
on a personal note, it's good to be back on the boards. i didn't realise people still played the game. reconsidering a reinstall myself.

Thieves can't use the SoM with UAI? Ain't that the whole point with this ability, to let the character in question use an item otherwise not usuable? It's correct that they cannot backstab with it though (that's probably why Staff of the Ram was instead recommended for this purpose), but it's still very useful for going invisible.

Life seems short considering how long you will be dead.
I guess the role-playing reason would be you only learnt to backstab with a thief weapon.
Still, it seems very plausible that if you learnt to backstab with one staff, you could do it with another as well. The construction is pretty basic after all...

I actually already knew that, but I should have been a little more clear. How about this: You can use the invisibility function of the SoM as an alternative to HS/MS. This will enable you to use another weapon (Staff of the Ram, SS of Mask, whatever) to backstab.
(I meant to say this in my first post when I said "you can backstab with any weapon a theif could use")

Because of limitations in the game engine, any weapon that does not have a "Useability Flag" for Thieves cannot be used as a backstabbing weapon. By the same token, any weapon that does have a Useability Flag for Thieves CAN be used as a backstabbing weapon. In my opinion, Use Any Item should effectively make every weapon useable by a Thief and therefore suitable for backstab. But there just isn't way to implement that without giving every item in the game a Useability Flag for Thieves, which would allow even low-level Thieves to use any item in the game.
My own solution to that problem is to use an item editor and add a Useability Flag for Thieves to the weapons that are wielded by my high level Thieves. If a Thief can backstab with a staff, why can't he backstab with a two-handed sword or the Staff of the Magi? Purely because of game engine limitations.
We knew that the engine wouldn't allow it, we are just talking about role-playing reasons. Maybe when you have UAI, your thief must concentrate so much on using the staff, that he can't backstab properly with it. If he did try to backstab, it could be too much and it might destroy him forever.
