Gnomes do get much, much better in AD&D 3rd edition. They get +2 constitution and -2 strength. They have a variety of other abilities that are similar to dwarves. In 2nd edition Gnomes get +1 to all saves for every 3.5 constitution. My friend once played a gnome with a kit called "Breachgnome" that was an incredibly good fighter! He was the only fighter in the group and the Breachgnome kit gives advantages when trying to block enemies from going past you. He could hold a hallway from goblins/orcs/undead all day long while the rest of the party used missile weapons and spells.

Gnomes are cool. They seem to be a more pleasant version of dwarves. They are a combination of many things. Halflings curiosity, a dwarf's good looks  , habitat and inventivness. As Thorin said they are dwarves who like magic basically.

That is generally not considered an advantage...

Ah sure it is! Halflings get the problem of +2 dex and -2 str. The good thing about D&D 3rd edition is that you don't need to have above 10 strength for non-warriors. Gnomes +2 con can be good for wizards looking for extra Hit points. It helps out on Fortitude saves too. Strength doesn't affect any save.

Yep, it's OK for those that never touch melee weapons. Halfling bonus is pretty good for mages, I think. With Point Buy, you only start paying much more after 14. Halflings and Gnomes can still get a cheap 12 Strength if they want.

Yea Halflings and Gnomes make the best straight wizards in 3rd edition. Elves make the best multi-class wizards.

hey, this might get a little off-topic, but are there any good AD&D 3rd edition websites? I would like to know more about AD&D (coz I've never played it b4.. god save me! hehe)...

and yeah.. gnomes are alright, but i woudlnt see them as a fighter though. a thief or mage would be good... :)
