well, thief dualclassed to a mage can use Staff of Magi, so can Mage/Thief. But then again, Mislead - multiple backstabs.....

You CAN backstab with staves only NOT with the staff of the magi.
And you can also backstab with a club.

And about how you backstab with a staff, the thief will probaly "shuffle" it up in the opponents ass can't wait to see the face of the enemey

I've done 198 damage with the Cutthroat (yes, backstab and critical hit ofcourse  )

Dimon> Its not possible to backstab with the staff of magi, the game wont let you.

Sure you can use an other weapon to backstab, then switch to the staff of magi to cloak yourself then get out of sight and hide in shadows.

But then the boots of speed are so much easier to obtain, and you dont have to be dual/multi class

And cloaking yourself with the staff of magi doesnt mean you can stand right next to a enemy and hide in shadows... you stil have to get out of his "sight"

You don't have to hide to backstab, just be invisible. Hiding makes you invisible, but so does equipping the Staff of the Magi or drinking a Potion of Invisibility.
