It is one of the epitomes of poor development to include such things in a game and is a poor excuse for attempting to make a game "difficult", but rather makes it frustrating.
Now if we could get developers to actually listen. A similar set-up of loading only next to rebirth shrines in Titan Quest is part of the reason why I recently put the game up for trade on Goozex.
To clearify the Titan Quest problem it allows you to save anywhere but you can only reload next to the rebirth shrines. This becomes a problems when you realize that all of the monsters are back as well and you'll have to redo everything you did before saving.
