Classic gaming.

It seems the times of a fighter using a traditional longsword and shield have gone out the window. With everyone using one of three items whilst dualwielding regardless of class, race or preference :Flail of Ages with Crom Fayer or Celestial Fury.

Halfling Barbarians, Gnome Clerics, Dwarf Assassins and the such and such (even though I am partially guilty for suggesting some of these characters this topic is not about that - lucky for me eh)

If anyone does actually have a fighter that uses longsword+shield or a cleric that only wields mace nowadays in BG2 regardless of mod or not they must have balls of steel.

I have seen what now seems to be an endless supply of modifications and after all said and done have decided to those that still use the traditional methods of gameplaying - limited use of items rather than packing enough firepower to kill elminster, longsword+shield for fighters, a cleric that doesn't happen to have flail of ages and crom fayer dual-wielding capability and opted for a mace and sling combo or humble quarterstaff and no armor. I salute you.

Show me a kensai that doesn't use crom fayer and mace of disruption combination and remain true to his class by using 1 sword. A ranger/cleric or berserker/cleric that knows how to use a shield I will pay for. A bounty hunter that can actually fight I will kiss his feet myself.

I may have what seems no point to some but if anyone does still use simple tactics or traditional gaming please post.

And note if you expect me to kiss a bounty hunters feet you are well off as I am too arrogant to do so so there :mischief:

Funny - I just posted something similar in another thread...

I always try to avoid the "common" weapon selections in favor of the abscure. I currently have Jaheira wielding clubs and shields, my previous ranger/cleric dualled clubs (avoiding a certain war hammer and flail combo like the plague), and my last fighter solo took a liking to halberds and crossbows.

With the NPC's you're often stuck with the way their prof points are distributed, so you can often only get really creative with your own character...

Random Thoughts on "Classic" Gaming

Not sure "classic" is the right word, but I think I feel you.

Long, long ago, I played a PnP D&D campaign as a Cleric. At an early level, our party found a Mace of Disruption. This of course went to my Cleric: a mace weapon, plus a compliment to the whole Turn Undead thing. Shortly thereafter, our party was beset by numerous undeads. We had the typical warriors & wizards in our party, but it was the Cleric that was the hero of the hour. A horrific adventure, undead at every turn... and my dude was front-in-center in saving the day. A rarity for a Cleric, to be sure.

Thereafter, vanquishing undead became my character's persona, and that character was the most fun I've played. The Mace of Disruption helped my PC develop a "theme". And it had nothing to do with some +5 hammer that gave me a 25 STR with +27 THAC0 & +41 Damage.

I usually assign items & weapons that match the NPCs' *persona*. For example, I figured Jaheira, being Druid, would be into the weather/elements thing. So I gave her Boots of the North, Dragon Scale armour & helmet & shield, etc, so that her Fire, Cold, & Electric Resistances were all over 100%. I also gave her a couple items that allowed her to summon Elementals (I forget which exactly), always memorized Summon Elemental spells, etc... complimenting Jaheira's "Druid/Nature/Elements" theme.

Regarding the Crom Hammer, Flail of Ages, Unyielding Axe, and other crazy overpowered weapons: yes, I used them all. But to use them, I had to, for example, have Minsc dual-swing axes & hammers, which I always thought went against his "theme" of swinging giant swords. (I know Rangers are good at dual-wielding, but I always thought Minsc shoulda been a Fighter instead.)

Now, when I play with Korgan, and he dual-wields Crom & Unyielding, is he gonna feel just like a Minsc clone?

I wonder how much more expansive the choices would be in weapon selection, if Crom, Fury, & Ages were never introduced. How much more of a range of actually-used weapons would there be?

Now, I could put my money where my mouth is and not use this stuff, but am I really gonna just let these weapons sit in the bag?

Devil's Advocate: when I first found these weapons, I must admit... it was pretty darn cool.

Yeah that's what I mean.

If anyone has any more thoughts to add regardin this topic or the earlier one that started this post go right ahead.

Yeah seems combinations, dual-wielding for mages, mutli-class grand mastery for gnome cleric/illusionists is around the corner.

If BG3 is like this - dual-classing druid/bards etc as can be done in NWN and whatnot - will it be a race to find the best character or will 'character personas' go out of style as seems to be the case ?

What bugs me is that there aren't any cool Bastard Swords in the game. The hand and a half sword (bastard) is the single most prominent weapon associated with knights in history. Other weapons which were used a lot by knights were the falchion and the mace. The mace got a lot of attention in BG but why not the bastard sword? I would have liked to seen better bastard swords and some falchions (my PnP knight character used one as his main weapon of choice).

That Bastard Sword in watchers keep was a good one. The Bleeder, Blade of Searing - some useful but also - take awhile to get - try getting a bsword from chapters 1-5 that isn't the Shapeshifting Killamajig
