Perhaps because Malachor V was the site of the destruction of almost the entire Mandalorian fleet. And the strong Sith presence there.

I haven't seen anything about Malachor being a Mandalorian world. I do know however, that Trayus predates the Mandalorian Wars, at least according to Sion.

Remember the hints that the Sith holocrons give Atris (if you leave her alive and unredeemed)? The teachings of Malachor (by which she means Trayus) exist in order to be 'a beacon' to something/someone.
My interpretation is that if anyone discovers and tries to use the teachings, something/someone will become aware of it. Extrapolating, I'd say it was the same someone/something that Revan was trying to unite the galaxy against, perhaps, and that he went to look for beyond the outer rim.
I'd further guess the mandalorians know/knew something about this threat which the rest of the galaxy doesn't, and didn't want to risk anyone 'activating the beacon'.
As for what the beacon is sending to, I don't know. Two pieces of evidence spring to mind:
1) The hints about 'these aren't the True Sith', the True Sith are still out there somewhere which Kreia keeps hinting at or
2) What might be beyond the Outer Rim, waiting for the best time to attack our galaxy? Remember the bit in KOTOR 1 where Canderous mentions how he and the Mandalorians have encountered things that look like self-propelling asteroids??? Hmmmmm...

I hadn't thought of it that way but it is possible.
I always thought the beacon was the wound in the Force created by all the death at Malachor.
Now that I think about it though, I think your right.

Sorry I forgot to answer you in my last post.
When you fight Sion in Trayus you can ask him about the academyand Revan. I remeber him saying "Lord Revan came here." he also says something about it surviving the destruction of Malachor and predating Revan.
