*nods* I know what you mean and believe you me, many of us appreciate it.
Soloing I have to go with a sorcerer, but partying it'd pretty much depend on whatever kind of mood I was in. Cleric (particularly dwarven), Blade, Ranger, Sorcerer are the most likely choices.
Oh and I'd just like to say... Dwarven clerics rock. Other than sorcerer probably the most fun character to play in my opinion.

Agreed, i mean, they're not the
best class for nothing.

And it would be fun to have about two level-one spells.
Oh, and you wouldn't have to keep finding scrolls for your mages' higher levels!

That's so true! The Dwarven Cleric was the only class i actually managed to play BG I through with.

K>M will forever be the strongest class, only challenged by the sorc. That's what I've experienced anyway. F/M is insanely strong, not for the HLAs though, but rather the ability to wear Vecna.
However, when you have a decent level kensai, some handsome blades and some good gear, you'll hit and kill anything anyway. On top of that, you have a much bigger spellpool available to you compared to a fighter/mage. It's twice as many level9-spells and so on.
And that's the reason why K>M wins.

He hits and kills almost as easy and have a lot more spells to toy around with.

To me no character could be mightier than the Holiest of Warriors: The Paladin. A player can chose any of the subgroups and not go wrong. The Paladin limits your gameplay and expands it so much at the same time.

I soloed with a fighter.
In mid/late ToB you can get the BMU, which kind of helps.
The good thing about BG1 mages is thatt hey don't have a summon limit.

Monks start of rather weak but can become freaky powerful at the higher levels. You can't wear armor but your AC keeps going steadily down whereas other classes' will level off when they can't find better armor (at 30th lvl I got -17), and eventually you can become immune to magic (natural magic resistance + amulet of power + ring of gaxx + final bonus in Hell nets you 93% magic resistance, plus really good saves). A good solo class if you're willing to endure the early game.
Archers are a severely underrated class. Their damage output is insane with their scaling attack and damage bonuses. They work well in parties (taking most of the kills, in fact), but on their own they're vulnerable because of their melee penalties. Not a good solo class.
Sorcerers are probably the most powerful class at any level and they're the best solo class. You can make them invulnerable with stoneskin and spell trap, and their nukes will eradicate opposition quickly (melf's minute meteors is your prime offensive spell). Healing is a bit of a problem (get lots of potions and find a ring of regeneration; hire Jan or Yoshimo for a short while to pickpocket one off Ribald). You can open locks with knock, and stoneskin or spell trap will protect you from traps (traps are more of a nuisance than a real threat anyway).

I've solod BG1 with a Cleric/Mage. You get all the stats uppgrades and a lot of spells. The only bad thing was that my computer really likes to annoy me by not working = I lost the character when I reinstalled everything on my computer.

I couldn't continue with him in SOA...
Or how about a Paladin that can kick som evil ass...? Very nice...

Consider the Bounty Hunter, High level abilities like Assassination and Use Any Item + awesome traps + thieving = very versatile and powerful character.

It's a shame that you can't use the swashbuckler kit for that... I've never tried, but I reckon that you cannot Dual-Class to kits? Fighter dualing to swashbuckler would be very nice.

vanilla F/T multiclass. Carsomyr +6, human flesh, tear of bhaal 10% mr bonus, seldarine amulet, ring of gaxx. 100% magic resistance. Why better than K->T ? GWW with carsomyr beats kensai bonuses imo, even when dualled rather late, such as lvl 15.

K->T can do all that, just trade GWW for Imp. Haste like all pro's do.

Imp haste is pretty weak compared to GWW with 2handed.

I'll never understand the fascination with a Kensai>Mage. I think a Berserker>Mage is better for the immunities and option to wear that great Elven Chain in ToB.

Well, the thing with a Kensai/Mage is that the mage part builds on the Kensai's weakness of not being able to wear armor by allowing him/her to wear a robe, which can provide some nice AC (in the case of the Robe of Vecna). A Berserker/Mage actually has to reduce his armor class if he wants to cast spells in mid combat.
I'd much rather dual a Berserker into a Cleric.

#2 Kensai>thief can be pretty deadly as well I'm trying one out as we speak so far I have 2 million exp. on paper I'll have about 7 attacks after belm use assasinate and each of those does 5x dmg with celestial fury in the main hand
#3 Kensai>Mage
#4 I finished Ascension with a Cavalier and you can't go wrong there he's immune to nearly everything due to 80% MR uber low saving throws natural immuity to fear ect AoF + Hardiness + defender of east haven = 90% damage resistance at high levels
