well, i've lived around the world and there is no place i would rather be than right here in texas...yeah, the heat gets pretty bad in the summer, but that is why you go tubing down the guadalupe with a cold case of beer. texas isn't for everyone, but if you like to relax and have a good time it is perfect. the only other place i have been that can even come close to the overall atmosphere is australia. we don't ever try to push our agenda on anyone else like new yorkers and californians, we just sit back and let people who want to bad mouth us preach their ignorance to the masses. texas is the only state in the union where you have forest, mountains, plains, desert, beach, and hill country. we have one of the richest economies in the entire world. Computer Industry - we currently lead the nation in
producing computer chip and communications: Small places like Texas Instruments, Dell Computer, EDS, Raytheon, National Semiconductor, Motorola, Intel, AMD, Atmel, Applied Materials, Ball Semiconductor, Dallas Semiconductor, Delphi, Nortel, alcatel, Etc,Etc.

we have somethign around 85% of the entire US gasoline refineries

65% of the entire US defense budget is spent in Texas...not counting actual armed forces and bases, which include Fort Hood..the largest military installation in the free world.

We are what all those people North of the Red River accuse us of. It means there's
no mountain that we can't climb.

It means that we can swim the Gulf in the winter. It means that Earl Campbell ran harder and Houston is bigger and Dallas is richer and Alpine is hotter and Stevie Ray was smoother and God vacations in Texas.

It means that come Hell or high water, when the chips are down and the Good Lord is watching, we're Texans by damned, and just like in 1836, that counts for something.

so, i'll step off my horse now and just say, remember the Alamo and God bless Texas

I lived for about seven years in the Dallas/Ft Worth area of Texas, and I've also lived in the Fargo/Moorhead area on the border between North Dakota and Minnesota. I'd have to say that, overall, I preferred both the climate and the people in Fargo/Moorhead. There was a sense of inclusion up there, a community spirit. Despite its smaller size, there always seemed to be a lot to do. And in the winter, when it was -20 Fahrenheit during the day, you would find people inviting you over for weekend parties to lift the winter gloom.

I suppose Dallas really isn't typical of Texas. I've heard that most Texans are friendly, courteous folk, but the outstanding impression I recall from Dallas was a shove-in-your-face dislike for anybody who wasn't Texan. Austin, San Antonio and Ft. Worth were a lot better--but I didn't live in those places. I've made a point since that time of never referring anybody for business or pleasure reasons to Dallas. Hell, I'd rather send 'em to Lubbock, dustbowl that it is; at least the people are human. Dallas? They'd as soon take your money and spit on your shoes.

Assuming you have shoes. If you don't, it gets nasty.

New Jersey has...well...uhh...beaches...hills...and...um...pine forest with devils.

5)But here you'll find the best girl of the planet, they are incredible, I can say because I stay in USA for a while.

@ the jaker - as far as california having #6, if hollywood's money is removed, you drop off the list. texas has always remained in that area as well, each year varies, but the #5 to #10 range.

as for california's energy woes, that was due to ignorance over basic economic principles. when the state deregulated the market for price they failed to open up the market to allow new suppliers, in fact, some plants were shut down.

I have lived in the Dallas area honestly it isnt why the say Texas has the nicest people in the world hell in Dallas we are all @$$ holes its placed like san antiono yes i cant spell hehe still summer for another week or 2
anyway in Dallas we are up on the lines of like the big cities like New York and Chacago how ever u spell it and LA well maybe not AS bad but we are up there on *******s list of big ass cities but the 1 good thing abuot texas

And for Nael, yeah, tubing the guadalupe(spelling?) is great...WHEN IT'S HIGHER THAN TWO INCHES!! i used to go every summer, but now every time i go, i'm draggin my butt along the rocks the whole way! I have to get up and walk more often than not. I suppose you know when it's high and when it's not since you live closer than me, but it isn't half as cool as it used to be. And Stevie Ray Vaughan rocks yesterday, today, and forever! I don't care where he's from, he's an immortal legend. Rock!

Northern California (San Francisco bay area) rules all, you bush loving texans have got nothing on us!

Although I'm not a big fan of Southern California, I have to say you are wrong on this nael. CA always outranks Texas in GDP and the portion from the movies and television is actually not that big. It's always tough telling a Texan that they aren't the best in everything... Also, I've travelled extensively in both Texas and California, and while both are beautiful, I have to give a firm nod to California (with Colorado a close second).

About Texas having bad weather, try living in this hell hole of Chicago. We've been having months of 95+ degrees Fahrenheit (35 Celcius) with 80-100 % humidity. We had 2 weeks of spring last April. Previous to that, we had months where the temperature never got above 20 Fahrenheit and often got down to -30 Fahrenheit (-34 Celcius) with a wind chill of -65 Fahrenheit (-54 Celcius). Combine that with the snowfall sometimes reaching 2-3 feet in just one day (almost a meter!), and it's a place that really toughens you. Chicago is a fun city, but the weather sucks. Live in this for awhile and you'd be begging to go back to the dry 100s of Los Angeles.

I love Texas because this is where my family and my stuff are. I was born here. Like every other place on earth, it has its interesting facts and stories. It just so happens that Texans have a reputation of being over the top in the pride department. Probably so. The fact is, there does seem to be quite a few Texans on this board.

I think the biggest thing we ALL have in common are the old(and new)D&D books we used and loved since way back when. Translating now into a love for games like SOA and fantasy in general. That makes the people here unique and interesting to me.

I get to speak with people all over the nation and Canada on the phone. The different dialects and accents are facinating and funny. The accents here can be as thick or thin as anywhere else. Hearing someone from Chicago try and imitate a Texas accent is funny! Besides, I love cowgirls. Chicks in big pickups and cowboy hats are very sexy to me. If you think Dallas people are rude because you were rebuffed by a chick at Cowboy's or Billy-Bobs don't worry, it happens to everybody.

Oh....I didnt have to say "Ain't" or "Ya'll"
once in the above statement. Thats hard for a Texan.

I think the weather in Seattle probably is best. It's rainy, but always temperate, never too hot or cold. Too bad that we didn't move there before housing became extremely expensive.

New Jersey, as someone remarked, above, is frankly an armpit. The men are thugs, the women are airheads, there's hardly a square foot that hasn't been paved over, and the delightful scent of oil refineries graces the environment at all hours. True, they don't have Texan pride, but then, what has NJ got to be proud of?

@happy evil - i agree, chicago is a really fun place. hard to beat gettign liquor delivered till 4AM. but i could never live there, pretty ugly overall...the only grass in the whole city is on wrigley field. i have so much fun up there for conferences, but i am always astonished at how many beggars there are there.
funny story - a lady was asking me and my friend for money at a mcdonald's. we were both gettign money out when she says," a five would be great, ten would be perfect"
oh boy...no way in hell she was gettign anythign after that.
next day, same lady, different fast food place, asked my same friend and a different guy for money again. this time they offered her a couple unopened hamburgers. she turned it down and went to the next table to ask for money...

yeah, the whole first strike thing is big minus for Texas, especially my hoem town of Killeen which is the home of Fort Hood, which would definitely be a prime target. it would be there and Fort Bragg in North Carolina which would be the first targets for a war. now, terrorist targets would be completely different.
