heh, here's my party, average level 11 at the moment

me (illusionist - chaotic neutral + worthless cat familiar)
keldorn (who's great in melee, and if he weren't such a righteous goody goody i would like him even better)
minsc (minsc is worth keeping just for the "jump on my sword evil" battle cry. he's the tank.)
jahiera (who keeps us all alive with Harper's call and that awesome conjure fire elemental, negative plane protection and insect plague. yow -5 AC)
valygar (who isn't really doing much for me, but he's good with a bow, and can backstab, so... he stays for now)
jan jansen (comic relief and grade A thief)

i am getting the feeling not many people here like jan, but i couldn't do without him. he is a fantastic thief, and when i had yoshimo he went yellow on me in nearly every conflict. it is kind of a weakness that jan is an illusionist and I am too, but it hasn't created too many problems yet. anyway, one thing i like about this party is that all (except jan) are decent in melee, and all are good from the long range with the right equipment, and with three decent-level magic users I can keep the nasties at bay. I still haven't picked up Imoen so maybe I will trade Jan for her and get Mazzy instead of Valygar, but this is working out at present.

First time through I finished up with:-
Me - Bard (Human)
Minsc
Jaheira
Mazzy
Aerie
Imoen

A bit light on melee but I got through in the end.

My current party is in Chap 4 and consists of:-

Me - Fighter (Half Orc) - Miss the love interest
Keldorn
Anomen
Valygar
Aerie
Nalia - will switch with Imoen when I rescue her

The most important character to me in both parties is Aerie. Probably because my style of play tends to be slightly magic oriented. Oh and we did get it together in my first party!

My Party:

1.) Black Hand (Chevalier)
2.) Minsc (IMHO the best fighter NPC)
3.) Anomen (good fighter, awesome cleric)
4.) Jaheira (excellent slinger with 'Sling of Seeking', don't use the druidic spells much)
5.) Nalia (Sucks at thieving, but powerful mage)
6.) Imoen (additional spellcasting, good thieving abilities)

All in all, this is a well-rounded party, with no Hitpoint-weaklings like Aerie and Jan.
BTW every party member can cast spells.

PC - Barbarian (pretty tough)
Minsc (I think he's a must)
Valgyar (fairly good, maybe I'll ditch him for Keldorn later)
Jaheira (her spells rock AND she can fight)
Aerie (spellcaster #1 for me)
Jan Jansen (excellent thieving skills + decent spells)

As you can see, there are a lot of different parties and preferences. Currently I'm playing with:

- Baassie (Monk - best single class PC)
- Keldorn
- Minsc
- Nalia
- Jaheira
- Valygar

This is a real cool party. 4 fighters and 2 magic casters in the back, so you can play very fast (I hate stopping the game every 6 seconds, get real(time)!)

My next party will be:

- Slutbitch (female Kensai/Mage)
- Korgan (best NPC in the game IMO)
- Edwin
- Viconia
- Jan --> Imoen
- different NPC's

Always keep a spot open for all the other NPC's so you can play with them all! Don't know who will win the sixth spot in the end. We'll see.

Bassie, I agree with the monk statement- most *powerful* single class overall in the game.

I will hate to see my Monk go, that's for sure. I loved how he was a little weak in the beginning of the game and how he gets stronger every level. Damn, he's a freaking tank right now at level 19. At 20 I'm going to be onstoppable. Monks rule all, Rail. We know. Now they know, and knowing is half the battle! (GI-JOE nostalgia)

My monk (lv. 20) hits about once per second and usually does 20-40 points of damage with each hit. Unstoppable. Gets a little boring for me, however, walking through anything I encounter. Add the magic resistance and cloak of mirrors and it's a joke.

You can pretty much solo the game with a Monk at that level, I almost do! I just walk around with my monk and when it's time to move along and I've killed all the baddies I click on 'all' and move on!

Slutbitch is the best name I've come up with. Says it all, don't you think? Image Image Image

BTW, Ubik... I DIDN'T say Korgan was the most powerful of all the NPC's, I said he was the most kick-ass NPC in the game. Korgan most (read will) return for BG3!!!!

Fighter/thief (Me)
Jahiera
Minsc
Korgan
Edwin
Viconia

This works out great. I have the most powerful wizard (Edwin),cleric (Viconia) ,fighter (Korgan), and My self for picking locks, stealing, Backstabbing, or just plain out sword fighting. Minsc and Jahiera are practically useless compared to the rest of the party, Jahiera is mostly used for healing and I always keep one resurrection spell memorized for Minsc since he seems to die alot. I dual classed my fighter at lev 9 to a thief. Before I did this I put all his stars into longsword and dual wield. I usually take my main character and run through backstabbing anything I can and clearing out traps and stuff before I bring the main party into the dungeons.

I managed to finish the game with the final party below (the NPCs had been in the group for almost all of the game):

- MONK (Me. Starts out as a reasonable fighter, then becomes an awesome fighter later. Almost unstoppable at higher levels.)
- Korgan (Great fighter, even when not Berserk. Destruction on two legs.)
- Minsc (Solid fighter. Better when Berserk. Dropped him once to take Valygar on board for his quest, then reinstated him after that.)
- Viconia (Best cleric around, and with the right equipment can be quite handy in combat too.)
- Jaheira (Moderate fighter, but mainly used for her spells - has some very useful ones early on in the game. Relatively weaker as the game progresses, due to slow levelling.)
- Nalia (OK thief. Cast Knock spell for locks she can't opwn manually. Reasonable mage.)

So, basically I had 3 fighter-types and 3 spellcasters, with Nalia chipping in with her (somewhat limited) thief skills. In situations where magic wasn't too important Viconia and Jaheira could also be used in melee whilst Nalia stood back and fired Tasheron's Bow all day long.

1. Conjurer(me) - bad ass spellcaster
2.Korgan - the best fighter in the game
3.Keldorn - he has Holly Avanger sword
4.Viconia - the best cleric + hammer of Thun.
5.Haer'Dalis - I gave him Dakkon's katana and
Celestial Furry + (solid
spellcaster at higher levels)
6.Imoen - "local" thief with Gessen Bow and
2nd magic user in my paty.

I am trying something different (suicidal?). I am taking the characters this forum seems to think are the worst and gonna have a go at it. So far (chapter 3) it is:

PC - Female Halfling Swashbuckler
Minsc (I have to have Minsc and Boo)
Haer Daelis (he is pretty weak so far)
Aerie (good mage, terrible hit points)
Nalia (actually not a bad character)
Viconia (I don't really know much about her)

I am going to pick up the most hated NPC -Cernd - and eliminate Viconia and may trade out Nalia for Mazzy. Any suggestions for messing up my party even more?
