(Raur island, Y997, January 1 night)

A sour grumble comes from within the wagon, "oh, what is that smell?" a familiar voice says. Meliss sticks his head out from the wagon (It's where the crew and the merchant slept) and looks at you "What the, why are you surrounding the wagon? And whats the smell?" From what you can see inside the tent, Meliss is the only one there standing up, and he is far from high enough to have been the creature you saw tidbits of.

Kolgar Bracklebreaker

lol sounds like dementors

anyway i'm a bit confused, the crew and the merchant are supposed to sleep there? then where are they and why is meliss there?

or is meliss part of the crew or..? sorry just please explain a little more on who is supposed to be with us, their job and where they sleep

either way i'm gonna guess this thing is either invisible or one of us or it has already left, however the stench still remains so unlikely unless it killed something or has left overs :>

spot and listen rolls, for either footsteps or tracks

As you go to the wagon and inspect, you see no signs of a creature, but the merchant lies eerily still.
(sorry for the confusion, I'll try to explain it plainly. There are four wagons, three of them contain crates and are covered with cloth and ropes to keep the crates in place, the fourth is the lead wagon, it is only a wagon covered in a big tent, that is where supplies like food, water, firewood and everything you don't bother to carry on person. At night this wagon serves as a place for the others to sleep, you as guards unfortunately have to find other places. So to explain what happened, the creature you observed looked as if it was standing inside the wagon. Now though it seems like it is gone. Meliss is the caravan master, in charge of logistics and other trivial tasks that are not guarding the wagon, so he is essensially part of the crew. As to who are supposed to be with you: Meliss the halfling caravan master, the three drivers all of them female halflings who have not presented themselves by name and the merchant, who you saved out from the wagon the last day.)

Kuu'shar
Meliss throws himself out of the wagon and looks at it "looks empty to me".

"We saw a gray scarred hand of some creature leaning towards something in this wagon, is something missing? or do you feel any different? there was a really bad stench and even wolves wouldnt approach us, do you have any idea whats going on?"

i tell this to meliss and make a sense motive check

also, was meliss the only one sleeping in the wagon?

I come closer to Meliss, the sword still in my hand and with a polite voice,

"Meliss, we think there is something wrong about this wagon. We might have seen a creature lying in there and the atmosphere was very creepy. Please let us inspect all the wagons. We don't need sudden surprises. There might be dangers lurking in our ranks."

I then turn around and with a moderate voice,

"Everyone grab some light and let's see what is all about here. I rather have some quiet nights and not worry what this wagons might contain. If anyone can Detect Evil now might be a good time to do so."

Out of Game: I will be out for 2-3 days due to work commitments. Please go on without me, I will let you know when I am back.

"I don't know, I've had this wagon since I got married." Meliss seems honest when he speaks "You need to get out girls, the guards need to inspect the wagon." one after one the drivers get out "you as well merchant... merchant?" There is no response from the merchant lying there, Meliss looks at you, completely at loss "I think something is wrong with him." he states.

You find that the merchant is not breathing, although his body is still warm. As you get some light over his face you notice something peculiar. A black spot right under his nose, looking somewhat like thoroughly scorched skin, the patch is only about half an inch across though.

i assume my heal check includes looking for a pulse, cpr if needed and confirming he is dead? since he isnt breathing i guess he is dead

i'll make a knowledge religion and nature check if i know anything about that black spot

i then call to meliss "Meliss the merchant is dead!"

"What has happened here?" I ask mostly to myself

while Kolgar checks the merchant I take my time and look if any of the crates had been opened. (I take a 20 in search)

The black spot does not say you anything specific, Meliss looks into the wagon "is that what smells then?" on his person you find a scroll case as you attempt to check him for further injuries.

Kuu'Shar
As you look over the crates on the other wagons, you actually notice one of the wagons have been tampered with, seemingly rigged in a way making the integrity of that crate very questionable (seems like sabotage to make one simple blow take that specific crate apart).

The scroll case seems securely locked, but its weight indicates that it is either incredibly complex or containing a great amount of paper. The lock is placed at the top of this metal cylinder and seems to be the only way of opening the scroll case. Around the keyhole, eight small numbered levers, all set to an up position, seemingly some kind of puzzle.

i mean like whats the puzzle
The puzzle is the eight levers he described.

Eight levers and only two positions (assuming their are only two) with any possible order, it basically means 56 possible combinations. Not at all hard to take a moment to go through, but that depends on if there is a failsafe to prevent more than X failed attempts at opening the case.

3 positions is 336
4 is 1680
5 is 6720

So, depending on the complexity of the levers, and if there isn't a failsafe, we can easily go through each and every combination if we have the time to spare.
Listen up maggots, Mr. Popo's 'bout to teach you the pecking order.
It goes you, the dirt, the worms inside of the dirt, Popo's stool, Kami, then Popo.

I examine the crate more closely, before attempting to open it.

as you look at it, you notice the only thing holding this side together is some fine threads, outside of the dislodged planks, you also notice a container of a clear liquid on the crate. Seems this was put together with great care. As you open the crate you see vials inside, at least a hundred inside this one. To your memory, these vials are identical to the vial you looted from the bandits, the one the merchant dropped in the wagon that made everything burn. You are pretty sure this substance is what is called alchemist fire, a highly flammable and dangerous object.

Kolgar
You notice a translucent layer on the base of the tube, it seems to be a quarter of an inch thick, but no obvious signs to how this tube shall be opened reveals themselves.

"Elmia please make a detect magic spell on this case, does anyone here have any knowledge useful into opening this? (disable device or open lock) also about this translucent layer (knowledge poisons or potions or whatever)".

also how many people are we all together including the dead merchant? in case someone is missing, after we are told about the tempered crate "I think we need to start questioning everyone here"
