Hmm, sounds like he was desperate. Would you have been doing anything on that computer to have made it incredibly valuable beyond the fact it can be sold as a computer?
Thinking a bit American - or generic westerner - there, Mag. ;)
Even if he sells it for half the purchase price, thats still more than a half year's salary for a state employee. We're talking dirt poor here, hell, people get attacked for a mobile phone over here.

That's a large difference from how things are here Lestat. Half a year's salary for a computer? I know I'm broke compared to most American's, but that's far-fetched for me as well. :o I suppose there's no hope of getting it returned?

Well a few rich people on top (and I am considered rich here) - and a large mass of poor people underneath with hardly any middle class in between. Plus a large number of people traumatised by war. Some people have to survive on a dollar a day. To put it in perspective, food is a lot cheaper too (at least the local fare), but still. As someone said, Liberia is not the lowest in the list of the Human Development Index (general indicator for wellfare & wellbeing in a country), it even hasn't made the list yet.
And for recovering my laptop, offering money to get it back, no questions asked, might work. My landlord said he was sending out someone to scout for it (and he is willing to cough up the money). I said the same to the guards, and other people. And I told a guy I know who does computer maintenance here to tell me of anyone who comes with a suspicious computer to have it flushed.

Wow, that is quite a difference. I hope you get it back. :( It sounds as if you've taken some good steps in trying to do so. :) Later everyone!

@ Lestat. I'm sorry for your trouble. There's nothing comforting to be said but I am VERY VERY glad you did not get hurt in the course of the burglary. What is the landlord going to do about improving the security?

The landlord said he was going to install an iron grate door in front of the balconydoor. I'd prefer an iron grate that totally blocks access to the balcony, but that might come later.

Lestat. I think you should push hard for that and anything else which will make the place safe. That could have been so bad.

Mofia? The new cross between the Mob and Mafia? I suppose they're Italian-American too? Owning pizza chains and countless other butchered cliches? :D
