*looks in. Notices that there are people here deliberately spilling alcohol and running over dogs. Is shocked but not particularly surprised. Is very glad to see the proprietor has taken no part in this vandalism. Summons the women's institute to tan the arses of the perpetrators and retires while they do so; clean up the mess; and sing Jerusalem while restoring Rav to his rightful place*

Yep. France tried to get Britain to sign a three-way 'alliance' with Russia the month before, but it was too binding for Britain.
Well, it wasn't just that. The Soviets wanted something in return for their help with Hitler, but the only thing they could offer Stalin was war. Hitler, on the other hand, gave Stalin territorial concessions, hence why Stalin was eager to side with Hitler in that instance. Well, that and the fact that Britain and France had appeased Hitler by letting him take the Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia (a country whom had a treaty of defense with the Soviets, although the Soviets couldn't help due to Poland not granting them the ability to march their troops through Poland to Czechoslovakia; you know, that one little factoid was something I don't think I ever knew about WW2 history, and it made that Hitler and Nazi Germany class I took this spring worth taking).

Hi, peoples.

A Thatcher reference? Playing on the phrase 'pistols at dawn', meaning a duel?

Apparently, though Thatcher was before my time, the Shooting Stars TV programme, however, wasn't. :p
