World Cup 2002
Eh? Oh, so Minerva's Japanese....I didn't know... Do you live in England @ Minerva (my memory's dreadful for people, names, places, numbers, infomation, faces, what I've just said, people etc). I loved the commentator's comment that the keeper is one of the many ''Mr. Cool"s in the Japanese squad .
IRELAND - SAUDI ARABIA.
My family are all supporting Ireland for the whole cup, and I'll be cheering their way for that match . I'd love to see Cameroon beat Germany too in that group ...
I think Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, and Rivaldo would be a safe bet... . But anyway, I think that Italy's massive mid field could soak it up...Whereas Brazil tend to get a little looser when threatened by a fast, deep attack (such as might come from a long Totti run or cross). Anyway, alll this is just idle chatter in the background of the main event:Besides, unlike any other country, the brazilian attack can come from anywhere, even from their backs, so who do you mark?

@Brink: There has been alot of bad reffing. Japan vs. Belgium: Japan should have got that winning goal.
Spain vs. Slovenia: The Spanish guy got the penalty kick, why didn't the Slovenian? He got tackled even worse.
Brazil vs. Turkey: We all know about Rivaldo.
Italy vs. Croatia: Italy is my favorite team, thats why I'm more upset about this one then the others. Both goals were legit. First one the guy was called offsides, but he clearly was not. Infact it was the same line ref that screwed Italy both times. He should be fired.

Congrats to Japan, they played very well
The refereeing is certainly a major problem is this tournament, what is the reason for this? Why are they so bad? What is the problem? Does anyone know how the refs and linesmen are selected?
You may well be right Sleep, I only saw one replay of the 2nd situation. The 1st disallowed goal was IMO clear cut, no offside. The 2nd one I thought looked like they were pulling each others shirts, and I presumed the linesmen decided that the Italian was the one who initiated that and thus disallowed the following goal.Originally posted by Mr Sleep
I am in disagreement, i thought that the goal should have been allowed or a penalty. Poor Graham Poll, his linesman hung him out to dry. Plus if you watch the replay of the Totti freekick, i was pretty sure it hit one of the wall's arms

The defences have been much more impressive in this world cup than the last few tournaments and the attacking players have had less opportunities to score goals, so the referees decisions are becoming more and more important, they tend to stand out in a match most.
I am not sure, it does sound like a viable theory though.
On the issue of Refereeing in general i think they have been told by Fifa to tighten up and they have aquiesced; booking players for innocuous reasons and quite often settling a match because of some decision they made.

Well at least you got to see the Chinese performing from their best side... I was actually quite impressed with the way that they (China) started the game...Originally posted by C Elegans
Sigh, it would have been nice to watch the game just for the beauty of the football. The hubby recorded it for me, but something went wrong, so only 16 minutes were recorded

It's a real shame they didn't score, plus they should have had a penalty...i mean would Brazil have been really heart broken to conceed one goal?Originally posted by Karembeu

Horrible - I just heard on the news that thousands of Russian hooligans are rioting in Moscow after the loss against Japan. Five Japanese students have been severely abused. About 25 more people are reported injured

@Sleep: Your brother's hypothesis sounds reasonable enough, especially considering that the differences between the teams seems to be smaller and smaller in today's football.
@Karembeu: Yes, the 16 minutes I saw didn't reveal that Brazil would eventually win with 4-0. I agree with both you and Sleep that it would have been nice if China had scored a goal, but since I didn't see the game I can't say whether it would really have been a possibility or not.

It is interesting to note that nearly every professional sport played by groups is falling into this category, Rugby Union and League being one example of a game that used to be open but is being more and more stilted by refereeing decisions. The referees actually win or lose matched now-a-days, it doesnt' seem to be down to the playersOriginally posted by C Elegans

@C Elegans:
CNN is reporting that at least one person has been killed and at least 27 injured in the riots. I wonder how much of it is actual hooliganism, as opposed to people who are poor having too much to drink and are seeking an outlet for their other frustrations. For instance, the LA riots of 1992 were sparked by the acquittal of the four police officers accused of beating Rodney King, but the actual reasons for the rioting went much, much deeper. I wonder if Moscow is seeing the same type of thing.

this is totally outrageous!!! the best team in the cup (italy naturally, well IMO) lost because of the !#¤)!#/¤)!"/¤)!"/¤)!=#(/¤=)#"(¤=)"#(¤)!=/¤#=)!/#¤=)!/¤#) linesman, he should be taken behind the barn and shot twice! then hung, stabbed, poisoned, executed, frozen, burned, decapitated, killed, slaughtered, murdered, and fed to the poodles!
i'm thinking about sending couple of my capybaras to have a 'chat' with that guy, if mafia doesn't get to him first...
brazil has good players like ronaldo and carlos, but still after everything, rivaldo lost all respect from my point of view with that act in the corner kick against turkey...
it would be interesting to see a final of S. Korea vs. Japan eh?

Like HLD suggests, there's a lot more to the riots in Moscow than football. I haven't been to Russia for close to two years now, but I used to go there quite frequently and I have several friends there as well as Russian guest researchers at my lab. From what I know, football is not a huge sport in Russia, it's nothing like in Italy, Brazil or the UK. Russia is a society with many deep problems, and these are highly visible in Moscow, where the enormous class differences meet. Moscow is the finacial centre of Russia, and most of the very wealthy people live there.
I don't think this riot was so much about football as other things. Also remember there is a long history of conflict between Russia and Japan - they still have no peace treaty because of the Kuril Islands.
@Locke: Easy man, it's only a game I think Italy will make it anyway, I'm sure they can beat Mexico.
