My friend took me to see the gorbals tonight. He is a surveyor and he has been heavily involved in the project. He is rightly proud of it. It is fabulous what they have done. I could never have believed so much could be achieved by throwing money at a problem :p

And what are gorbals? The image that I get in my mind is of some thick, hairy pelted gerbil, but I suppose that's wrong... :D

For years and years and years and years it was the worst area of Glasgow. It was poor and violent and it had a horrible reputation for razor gangs and various thuggery. Famous in "No Mean City" and home of Jimmy Boyle amongst many other things. Really scary place
And it is wonderful now. :D

I wasn't too far of the mark then, as far as the olden days go.

So some gentrification project then?

by Fiona
Yes. But this is serious. They have built all the houses to tremendously high specifications. The designs were put out to competition and so they have many different styles side by side, from different architects. They are not all beautiful but they are all very very well built. And the whole effect is good overall. They used 1% of all capital expenditure for art and it shows. And 25% of every building is for social rented housing so although it is really a gentrification process there is still a high group of local people still there. And people with a connection or who were on the social housing waiting list got first refusal to buy: at the outset you couldn't sell anything in that area so they were cheap and some people managed. Now they can't afford to buy there but the reserved stock is protected ( I hope forever but the government is mad so I can't be sure)

My friend is so pleased and so he should be. He had a lot to do with this and the whole project was enormously expensive. But it will last this time :D
