I think a cheshire smiley would impinge on copyrights for something.

I'm sure someone's bought the rights to it. If not...maybe I should.
Rav licking DJV? Curiouser and curiouser.
It was never going to happen. Another of Fiona's fantasies.
@ Rav: the wildlife should fear you...
Now, why is that? I'm not the one who goes around licking different animal...
unmentionables...
@Mag, you want to buy the rights or use one of those smiles as an avata or something like that?

If no one owns the rights to the cheshire cat and the whole Alice in Wonderland deal, I could make some serious money buying them. I'm fairly certain Disney or some company like that bought them years ago though.

I'm not sure, Magrus, but I think once a thing is out of copyright you can't own the rights at all. It's public propety then, or something. At least there is a publishing company here which sells very cheap editions of classic books precisely because they don't have to pay a royalty.

Yep she-of-Rav-licking-DJV-fantasies has a good point. Disney probably still has some rights on the Animation film they made, but I think you can reproduce and use things from Alice in Wonderland as long as you don't try to pass it as your own.

I don't know about that. I know someone who went online and started buying up songs which were for sale for dirt cheap from the 80's or so. I'm fairly certain songs are copyrighted in some manner, and I think he bought a few of them because the bands broke up, had no interest in them, and the copyrights were expired. I could be wrong though, it was a rough night that he showed me.

As far as I know copyright lasts a very long time (do you know it's a hundred years, Lestat?), and until it expires someone owns it, even if they are not interested. So your friend would have bought the copyright, probably. I think that's how it works and you can certainly sell copyright.
@ Lestat. It's up to you. Believe DJV, who said it happened; believe Ravager, who said it didn't. Whatever, it's not my fantasy

Yep, but that's recent material. (Yes the 80's is recent).
Most classical music for instance is in the public domain. So you may record it and sell it without paying any royalties. But such recording are protected by copyright and people can't use them like that (for a commercial for instance). But those type of copyrights are even more limited in time.

Heh, he must have just bought some really crappy songs from the band then.
Pure spam there Phreddie. That'll get you a good, sound whacking from a mod.

Aw come on Phred, there are far worse things going these days in the SF. Ask bunnyboy and his toadies.

Hmm, does anyone else randomly go from feeling aggressive and dominant to being more than happy to do whatever it is someone else says and completely submissive?
Well we thought you were in real life, but didn't you deny that?
That depends on the definition of real, remember?
@Mag, that would be the definition of Chu.
