Fiona has the right answer. The fact is they want to make you think that the upper figure as a whole is a triangle, but it isn't (and neither would be the lower one if the gap was filled). The long sides of the two triangles are not parallel, the green one is steeper than the red one (2 over 5 compared to 3 over 8). Thus the long side of the first figure bulges slightly inward and the lower figure slightly outward, hence the gap.
