I see, that was a satisfying answer. ;)
Nonetheless, it's a nice (as in nicely done) comment on a frustrating habit in debates. Of course, I'm biased as it annoys me immensely as well when people go all self-righteous, it makes for poor debates.

Glad it pleases you. :) Ciao Dottimo.

later Dottie.
When people are convinced they are right, and far more importantly that everyone else is wrong and as such their opinions don't matter, or that they shouldn't disagree. It makes for an unpleasant and frustrating debate, as it almost invariably annoys someone who has opposite views, and things get nasty, more often than not ending up with the thread being closed and a good debate lost. :(
If not, then it ends up (usually) with people holding 2 different running debates on the same topic, where one side covers the aspects they like and the other covers what aspects they choose to look at. It also seems to be very much viewed as either/or situations, you can't, for example, say 'this makes sense, and I agree with it, and so does this, which I also agree with, but is an argument put forward by the other 'team', as such, because you're still not agreeing with one side or the other.
I can handle views in opposition to mine, but acting as though others opinions aren't valid because they disagree with your own is something that annoys me intensely, even more so since to dismiss their opinions about other peoples' opinions by saying 'you're wrong' is just as bad as dismissing other people because they disagree with you. The point in debates here is to learn about other peoples' viewpoints IMO.
I have not, thankfully, come across many people here at GB who do this, and even then not on most topics (9/11 being the most recent exception in some few cases), but it still raises my hackles, and I have to withdraw from the debate a while to stop from starting flame wars.

Controversy is good, though it does tend to make debates more heated. Hell, I stir up chaos every now and then just to enjoy the change in pace, and the buzz of conversation it generates for a few days after (remember the avatar stealing incident? I planned that for a week :D ).
The problem is that with some people even when it has been logically proved they are wrong they still insist that they're right. It gets a bit like the Black Knight in Monty Python and the Holy Grail sometimes. It just seems to me (and I am reasonably arrogant/egotistical, in a way) to be the pinnacle of arrogance to insist that your views and your views alone are right, which is much of why I'm not a big believer in organised religion.
Overconfidence on the other hand I find to be quite a handy thing, when matching wits with an overconfident person (most of whom tend to underestimate their opponents in my experience) you have an enormous advantage over them simply because of that overconfidence. ;)

Hello Ysh, T' and Tyb if you are still here :)

I'm just in for a brief visit...at last I have come to the point that this boring article I've been working on the last few weeks must be finished tomorrow, so I can't avoid it any longer...it will be a long night...

How are you doing?

HI CE *hug*
Indeed :) I believe that the Candy Man was not in the least bit masochistic either ;)

*hug* @T', everything well with you?

@Ysh: Yes, I have only had energy to spam lately...I am starting to have an identity crisis since I haven't posted anything intellectual for ages now :D But I am fine except a bit frustration over some work related technical problems :)

@ CE pretty good :) I need to get motivated and look for some job related seminars :) My boss offered to pay so I'm taking her up on it before she changes her mind :)
@ Ysh, did you ever read the short story The Candyman was based on? (Clive Barkers "Sweets for the Sweet")

Just a quick post to drop in and say hello. I may not get another chance for a while... Took me a good hour to locate an operating computer, I can tell ya now. What's really bad is that it uses AOL.

@T' I love Clive Barker - and I have read the story :) Ironically, I have returned to his Books of Blood (collection of short stories) since my attention span is not so long at the moment  ;)

@Ysh:LOL, actually, I like it this way too :D Maybe I should change identity, and start posting in Craigian ;)

@T': You'd better :) Are the seminars about something you are very interested in?

Thankfully the heat wave is over here, it is actually getting rather cold at night now. I like it much better when the lab is not sauna-style!

@ Ysh I liked the story muc more than the movie, although the movie wasn't as bad as I'd feared.
@ Sleep..I prefer his short stories to his novels for some reason :)

@ T' - Stable now, they think. She went into cardiac arrest around 10 last night (the reason I left), then two more lesser seizures during the night and early this morning. They've put her on meds, and if she does well for the rest of today and tomarrow, I'll probably head back home Monday night. (School was out for holidays, so Monday was open) :) It still is really too soon to really judge her condition, I guess I should say.
