Me, neither.
Stephen R. Donaldson? Ugh. He was coming to speak at my university a few months back; the Fantasy Literature Club (of which I was supposedly a member) was supposed to read some of his work and attend the meeting. Even the person in charge of it all said his writing (at least the one thing she had read by him) wasn't all that good. I'm glad I missed out on reading his stuff... and his scheduled appearance slipped my mind.
No, seriously, it did. Ah, well, such as life.
I like the Zhirrzh... I think that's how you spell it. They're an alien species in Timothy Zahn's Conqueror's Trilogy. Another good yet bizarre alien species was the Paath (again, I think I'm misspelling it). It's kind of odd, how they are in the story (The Icarus Hunt), but they are pretty much the main players in the story, yet you see them so very little in the book itself.
I can't think of too many good science fiction stories with aliens in them (let alone with a decent conceptualization of alien mind-sets, like Fiona is looking for), seeing how most of my reading lately has been rather lacking in both aliens and sci-fi (school stuff). I then began reading some Star Wars Clone Wars stuff (one was pretty good, the other one was craptastic). Then I read Cobra Trilogy (aliens were involved, but it was centered mostly on humanity, and I didn't think it went that in-depth with the aliens involved). Now I'm reading We, which is a 26th Century dystpoia story, set on earth with no aliens (well, actually, the whole story is this guy transcribing certain events in his life, which are going to be put onto a shuttle and launched into space, to make contact with possible alien life).

General: "Those aren't ideas; those are special effects."
Michael Bay: "I don't understand the difference."

Ah. So you actually didn't read him, and the other person did read only one thing by him... so basically you don't what it is about?
The Amnion in the Gap series work well because they're not the differently coloured human with added claws/horns/tentacles type of alien, but a radically different life form with totally different morals.

I think that God in creating man somewhat overestimated his ability.

And that is exactly what makes a sci-fi novel good, IMO
@ Chim. I haven't read the series Lestat mentions but the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant is truly brilliant. Not sci-fi, more fantasy, but really really good books. I did start another series of his and did not enjoy it, nor get far with it. But he should not be dismissed if he never wrote another good thing again. And Lestat clearly knows that he did
