You mention the trip and Soloman goes into detail about it, "Well as you are probably aware Mandrake the Mad was one of the most powerful arch-magi back in the 'age of heroes'", Soloman says with abit of a laugh, "Turns out that some inquisitors came across information from one of their spies that the mage had been making secret vaults across much of Albion, each of these giant vaults were made to house powerful magic artifacts and the like which haven't been in existence for years."
By this point he has put the journal down and begun walking about his office waving frantically, then he turns about on his heel and begins pacing.
"As you well know, the guild loves it's study of magic and the thought of actually collecting one of these artifacts especially before the inquisition confiscates them has been put on high priority. The inquisition has yet to locate any of the vaults and isn't sure if any of the houses are aware of this golden opportunity, but as you know the illithids are methodical and take many precautions. Seeing that I'm still considered a novice, but have acquired much faith from the Guild Headmaster he wants to send me. If inquisition asks for the where abouts of maesters and high class staff they don't need to disclose my location since I'm still a First rank."
"The headmaster has been having most of the higher end wizards work on secret projects, I think they are calling it rune research, but it's all a facade for them to gather all the top diviners in the guild to find the whereabouts of these vaults... and they found one."
By this time Soloman has finally calmed himself down abit and pulls down a map of Albion...
Knowledge (Geography): 14+5=19
From your extensive knowledge of maps you note that this map of Albion is about 30 years old. It's hard to find accurate maps and the art of cartography is truly a most difficult one in this day and age, to this date there has been no accurate "master map" made for Albion, let along the entire world created yet. This map, while indeed huge and nice for display purposes shows it's age since the warping of Central Albion making the city of Morderheim look roughly twice the size of much of the surrounding area. Maps during this period where made to impress the insane late emperor Tinberous and to stroke his ego rather than for accuracy.
"We just know that it should be on one of the smaller islands of the Lustaria Archipelagos. I don't even know if it really has a name. Uninhabited by any intelligent lifeforms as far as most are concerned. Where exactly on the island is unknown along with what these vaults look like or what's inside. Thing is I'm going to need another person who I can trust to go with me, and who has still maintained a fairly low profile. Which you have. Loremaster Cid of course was a secondary option, but only because he a retired old geezer and the inquisition couldn't care less about his work."
Knowledge (Geography): 19+5=24
You recall that much of what Soloman says of the Lustaria Archipelagos is true, the islands have often been called the savage land and the only records of any sort of civilization having lived there was long ago with old ruins once belonging to a possible ancestor of the lizard kin. The geography of the region is known to breed carnivorous plant, giant insects and on some claims even manage to support pre-historic creatures that have been long extinct on the mainland.
You ask if it's okay if you take the book back and Soloman simply shrugs. You pocket the book back in your vest along with the money you intended to use for fees. You begin considering who you should consider giving the book to for further study. While Loremaster Cid could definitely transcribe the book he would ask too many questions about the books true owner and his strict moral code would probably get you reported. All the other members of the guild would either be unable to help you, too busy, or would expect ridiculous fees or might black mail you later if you were to seek their help.
You give Soloman your thesis on the axe. "Perfect", he says with a smile, "I'll give it a small look over when I need to take a break from packing... By the way are you able to go on the expedition?", he asks.

The Star elf leans back in his chair an thinks for a moment about the request... Gets up and begins moving around the room"We have an artifact, it is unique... well as you may have guessed each artifact is in itself unique... However, this one is truly a league of it's own, we have been safe housing it, in hopes that we may find one who could wield it. You see, what separates an artifact from just any other magic item, say a scroll or even Melkor's spellbook, as powerful and magic rich as it is... Well artifacts have a spirit, more often than note these spirits are something that are created with the item, just part of the process usually inheriting properties of the creator, much like a parent and their child. Sometimes these personalities are quiet dominant and pronounced other times very minute, some take on the personality of the wielder, in this sense the evil minions of Har'zack often try to twist the souls into a shadow of their former glory to better serve their being. Then we have one artifact, that is most interesting indeed..."
The star elf pauses and stairs out the window. "I could lend you this artifact, and if you could make it work, then you might as well be it's true wielder. But I must do so under a condition. You must not speak of it to Melkior. He does not know of the artifact's existence, and while the artifact is not evil. It's history... can be said to be truly painful. Are you still interested?"

The ghostly, elf snaps his fingers with one hand while the other arm stretches down to the floor and then emerging from the floor he pulls out a ivory staff. The staff is engraved with symbols crowns and various runes, at the very tip of the staff there is a ruby inset into it.
He places it on the table, "While I myself do not have the power to bring the dead back from the grave directly, this mighty staff can. It is not an artifact, but by no means should you take it lightly. It is the 'Staff of the Hierophant'. It absorbs the knowledge and teaching of the world into positive energy which can be used to resurrect the dead. While you possess the wand on your person you may find some of your natural understanding of the world to be 'lost', not that taking it will make you a dullard, you simply will not be able to glean as much from your earthly trials as others can, in exchange it gives you the power to bring back people from the world of the dead, under the condition that they are willing to come back and that their body in the realm of the dead can exist on our plain of existence. It gives him the resolution to make the sacrifices that many are unwilling to take, such as his current form... But she fears that is might also make him reckless, as you may have gathered from his capture. We fight them because it's our divine duty, his reason, well only the mistress knows for sure. Staff of the Hierophant
Energy Current/Maximum: 7,500/ 10,000
Use 750 energy per level to resurrect.
Targets resurrected lose a level or -2 constitution if at level 1.
If the constitution score would be drained to less than 1, the spiritual body of the person is too frail to exist in the mortal realm ever again. The spell fails.
If a person does not want to be resurrected, the spell simply fails.
Only usable by good aligned Clerics or Monks (and Paladins if they existed).
While the item is on your person, you lose 25% of your experience gain which gets transferred to energy. If the staff reaches maximum energy, the staff continues to drain experience, but no energy is stored.
Because of the energy limits, only a maximum of a level 13 character can be resurrected and they will become level 12 after doing so.
Finally:This item is a massive Divine Magic beacon, anyone looking to detect magic (ie. Inquisition) will be able to detect it within a 100 mile radius.

You head down the tunnel, it becomes incredibly dark and your dark vision takes over... as you reach the end of the tunnel you find a giant circular room with a strange doorway which is built with a solid Obsidian Archway warped to form a gothic arch in the very centre staring back at you. There is a metal door with only a knocker built in on both sides.
The archway of the door is just built in the middle of the room without being attached to any wall, where it can be of some use, a plaque in front of the door is covered in vines and roots that sprout out from the ground and cover the inside of the mountain and burst forth from the stoney interior. Not to mention the etched text has become dull and flattened over years of what appears to be weathering.

Forgot to put it in the class features but did include it in the speed section. I'll update that continuity error here shortly.Don't forget your unarmored speed bonus goes up by +10 ft at level 3.
Oh, and I realize I occasionally make stuff up for the background you provided me, I hope this is alright. I'm trying to stay true to my character type when defining the monastery I trained at, and there was a lot of room for interpretation.
"No! You must not tamper with life and death so casually," Khannon nearly shouts. Taking a moment to collect himself from that outburst, he continues-The star elf considers this... His eyes go wide with a realization, then he settles himself down. "One of my colleagues has a possible solution for the rebuilding of your monastery... however I may hold the answer for returning the noble residents of the monastery back, however it comes as a bit of a task in itself... "That is not part of my request. I am deeply saddened at the loss of my master, but to disrupt the natural evolution of life and death would bring an even greater dishonor to the fortress than the attackers ever could.
No, I shall continue their honor, starting with just myself and the building finding my own students to pass on the secrets of my training. I shall also bring justice to those responsible for my masters death, but I haven't the right to take their lives or bring the lives of my masters back."
You may as well keep this staff. If you hand it over to me, my first action will be to attempt to destroy it; as I have explained, I do not believe resurrection is ever the answer and I find this item to be an unholy pox upon the natural cycle of life."The ghostly, elf snaps his fingers with one hand while the other arm stretches down to the floor and then emerging from the floor he pulls out a ivory staff. If these 'forgotten' are apart of the attack on the monastery, and it's highly likely they are, I will accompany Melkior and his Derro friend to find them.
However, if I see he becomes a threat to us and himself, I will not hesitate to subdue him and leave him where he lies."

As soon as the star elf says this, Rahg'nuul's thoughts immediately return to the forged copy of Melkior's spellbook he still has hidden amongst his possessions. Rahg'nuul contemplates compounding this slight betrayal of sorts with yet another secret.
[gets up and paces around]
"Master elf, look at me please. If you don't agree that I am a living, breathing avatar of pain to behold, then I will submit another wish. I already sense a relationship to this artifact though I would not dare to compare our two tales without knowing more".
"I will accept guardianship of the artifact and explore its full potential and purpose. I pledge to keep its existence secret from Melkior but I will not make this pledge to an unnamed elf. What is your name and station amongst your people? And is there more you can tell me about the item?"

"When do we set off my friend? my lugged is still ready, I admit I havent unpacked it yet" I burst into laughter, "Tell you what my friend, you can count on me anytime you need, I shall give you the book I want to translate and in return should your future patrons will is to iniciate you into magic I shall give you a few helpful hints and teach you a trick or two about this wonderful art, but remember the inquisition is a pain in the buttocks once they sniff you out, when I was getting my license I was (I shift around) I met one of those dreaful people, they are not nice thats all I can say about them. So tranlate the book for me, and be discret with what you may find, it was guarded by a drangon after all (I laugh hard again then return to be serious) This document could well be very trubling to you and me, so if you translate it keep its content a secret not for me Ive can take care of myself but I do not wish to cause harm to a dear friend and such a promesing scholar and you might as well be the next mandrake before he turned mad(I laugh loudly again) so can I count on your discration my friend?" I offer this time 20 gold pieces and the promise if he becomes a mage someday to teach what I can to him. "I feel like driking some te, do you have some?"
Have you seen my brain around here? No? well in case you see it its brainy and squishy looking. If you see it let me know

The Star elf looks somewhat surprised by your outburst and proclamations but takes the wand and drops it directly pointing down towards the ground where it sinks back into the floor and out of sight. The star elf then says "I'm sorry to have offended you, the culture and customs of this world are different from our own. I will take me leave now, with your permission. Feel free to make yourself comfortable during your stay at the castle, and if you need anything you can probably find one of us at some point in time."

The elf ponders this for a bit. "It is very difficult to explain, but as you may have guessed we are not from your plane of existence as such my real name is both in comprehensible and unpronounceable in this reality, however the first people I met whenever I first came to this planet called me 'Hafaza' and since then I had just adopted that as my name while I've been here." The elf then motions you to follow him with a smile as he leaves the room. You feel compelled to him. The star elf continues to explain himself as he leads you down a series of corridors. "My people exist solely for one reason, we exist as a sort of counterpart to the forgotten. When the Forgotten emerged on this world we simply came into existence as an opposite and equal reaction. Our goal is to simply erase the forgotten's existence from this reality. When they are go we will disappear as well. Unfortunately they are able to manifest into corporeal being while we remain incorporeal, if that weren't the case we could all commit Hari-kiri and simply never have caused a problem to begin with. While I exist however, I will do all that I can to serve lady 'Aradil'." He finally stops in front of a giant door and opens it.
"I could have teleported us here, but I sense you dislike our teleportation method, so thought you might prefer the scenic route.", after giving you a quick smile his face returns to grim as he goes over to a pedestal in the middle of the room and retrieves a small box laid on the centre of the pillar, "Here lies the artifact."
He brings the box over to you an gives it to you. "This ring belonged to the late Gelidia Wybille. She was an adventurer much like yourself back in the age of heroes. But when she died rather than leaving the world her spirit felt tied to this world, and more importantly this ring. Unfortunately the magic used to bind her powers is very dark and tragic and roots itself in the strongest kind not found in any spellbook. I personally do not understand the nature of how the ring came to be, outside of it's very existence stands as a testament to both the power of inner will and conviction of mortal races."
"The reason this artifact is possibly one of the most powerful of all of them, is that the ring for some reason or another completely cloaks it's magic powers, where as most artifacts and magic in general can be detected. However, only one hero has been able to make it work as of yet and he gave us back the ring after he mentioned something about the ring giving people visions and the like. If you choose to bear stewardship to the ring avoid letting Melkior see it since he will probably recognize it as belonging to her and she was one of his greatest friends having adventured for years."

Soloman seems excited about the idea of learning magic. "We'll be leaving by cover of nightfall, our carriage will be arriving at the 19th hour, so make sure to check your waterclock. As for the book, my lips are sealed." Soloman sets about making tea, "Is Grey Earl fine?" he asks, after giving an answer he makes the tea and the two of you begin discussing various things, that when Soloman asks a question that catches you off gaurd, "If you don't mind me asking, that time you met the Inquisitor, did you see his Astirax? What was it like?"
An Astirax, is a familiar that follows an inquisitor around and is used to scent out magic. Not much is known about these creatures and research on them and the inquisition is forbidden (although some people do it anyways), there are various rumours surrounding such creatures. One of the most popular ones in magic communities is that the inquisitor gains all his magic from his Astirax and that inquisitors are nothing but human puppets while the Astirax is the true "Inquisitor". The Astirax is generally a more threatening version of a regular animal, although many claim it's true form is truly beyond this world. There are also rumours that the Astirax of the head of the inquisition is something completely unique, although nobody knows what it is for sure.

The elf then motions you to follow him with a smile as he leaves the room.

"Thank you Hafaza. A ring with powerful magic that does not attract the notice of The Inquisitors, or any other, is indeed wonderous"."The reason this artifact is possibly one of the most powerful of all of them, is that the ring for some reason or another completely cloaks it's magic powers, where as most artifacts and magic in general can be detected. However, only one hero has been able to make it work as of yet and he gave us back the ring after he mentioned something about the ring giving people visions and the like. [Rahg'nuul opens the box to look at the ring]
Knowledge: Arcana check made against the ring: 5 + 5 = 10 (DM please advise)
Tell me, does the ring go by any known names? And do you have any local scribes or texts that might reveal more about the life of Lady Gelidia?
Might I try on the ring for a few moments while we are alone and I am under your personal attention?

"Fair enough. One thing to keep in mind is that the customs of this world are not only different but varying from person to person. We do not think in unison or all have the same beliefs."I'm sorry to have offended you, the culture and customs of this world are different from our own. I will take me leave now, with your permission. Feel free to make yourself comfortable during your stay at the castle, and if you need anything you can probably find one of us at some point in time."
Others would have greedily taken that wand without question, and some would revere it's power as helpful and awesome. For me, resurrection is a very tempting ability, the ability to bring back loved ones even for just a day, is a wonderful thought, but it is also a taboo among my people.
Thank you for the room, just let me know when we head out."

"I...I did, I rather not talk about my friend, its not that I dont want to talk about it, but there are no words I can express to truly give you an image, the only thing I could say is that they could see the very core of my being when I was tested, there was no shadow unturned no..no memory touched by them, never have I been so.." I trail off into the memories while I sip from my cup of tea "What where we talking about young lad? I seem to have forgotten"
I after talking some more I tell him I need to deliver the translated book by today so if he can do it right now, once its done I read it for the information and then head to my "Benefactor" residence and deliver the original I keep the translated copy for myself, If my patron wishes to meet me I come in, if not then I simply wait for my reward.

You look at the ring carefully. It is a simply gold band with a single diamond imbedded in it. You look at the ring to see if you can see any sort of marking or anything of that nature that could clue you in on it's purpose.
You ask about the ring and whether it goes by any names.
Hafza nods, "while the ring never actually had a name, most would agree that 'Chanceborn', Ms. Wybille's title she gained while adventuring would be most appropriate.", Hafza sighs, "To be honest I do not know much about the life of Ms. Wybille, aside from her being a prominent adventurer back in the age of heroes, many such tales were quelled when inquisitors and the like began hunting down the minstrels of their song, the history books became purged and people became frightened. There may be an older generation that would know of her seeing as her exploits, like many others are well known, but talking about such tales tends to be avoided in fear."
The Elf looks around, "I'd be most interested to see if the ring responds to you, since this ring tends to be quite particular, most people find it to be of no use, but we did have one person, a Thomas Metra, use it. As I mentioned he felt that the ring brought him little sleep and he eventually returned it, he unfortunately died a week later. But most likely an unrelated incident."

"Very well" says the elf before leaving the room with a bow.

Soloman agrees, but has you on the condition that you help pack some of his gear. During the process, you come across a cage with a black curtain, curiosity getting the better of you, you lift the curtain and a giant *Kaw* comes from the cage. Soloman, without even looking says, "Seems like you've met Edgar... I've taken up the art of Rookery. Interesting art really, used to be a skill left strictly in the hands of druids and rangers of the eastern forestlands. Eventually evolved into a sport for illithid nobles, now it's going to become my means of communication to inform the headmaster of our arrival on the island.", he says casually still making a flurry of notes. You get approval to pack Edgar as well amongst his many supplies, he appears to be bringing everything on the journey save for most of his books and the furniture bolted to the ground.

One of the few books he is taking though catches your eye, "Master guide to Astronomy", "I see you've taken up astronomy", you say casually. "Most certainly have, quiet a bore though to be honest. I'm only undertaking it in my studies since I needed to have another degree in order to achieve my next link." He says indicating to his single mithral chain on his collar, "I figured I'd uncover that hidden art on the boat trip since we won't have much to do, and then I'll come back, take my exam and be promoted."
Soloman returns to translating, "Personally, I think it's bollocks, I already have 7 degrees, I should be a 5th rank at the very least."

"They would rather promote an addled brain orc that agrees to everything rather than promote someone who actualy thinks, I might be among the oldest of the order but my rank is still rather low since Im always at odds with the majority of the the Council, by the gods they cant even stand one or two pranks, remember the time I turned the grandmaster beard green in the middle of a seminary examining the reproduction cicles of the now gone horned toads?"

I finish packing Soloman things and wait till his done with translation(I read it), then I take it to my master place and give only the original book to him and wait for his anwsers

Hafza's brow raises, "Well I'll be..." Hafza, slowly leads you back to your room. When you arrive back at the room, he opens the door and says "If there's anything you need feel free to find me. May fate grant you humble rest."

You finish packing the rest of Soloman's alchemy equipment and his various ingredients, ranging from typical batwing flakes and powdered crow beak to rarer ingredients such a ground up amythetist.
"Done", Soloman says handing you the book with the papers slipped in the book. He looks at you with some worry in his face, "You might want to be careful with that... if what it says is true than they're a huge conspiracy going on and that book is going to become highly valuable blackmail material..."
Soloman pauses, gets up and looks you in the eye for a few seconds, then begins to summarize. "According to that journal, belonging to THE Ph'ank Pharaz, apparently he has been using some rather dark magics to defend Morderhiem. As you probably know the Veil house are the most popular illithid family amongst most citizenry because they ensure the safety of Morderhiem against orcs not under the budget, the few stray gnoll armies (assuming they could get this far), the forces of the Overdark, and the ever present threat of a random giant invasion from the western front. The illithids have tabs on enough of local orcish warlords in the surrounding area that they don't bother attacking us, and the further away orcs are too busy in bloodfeuds with the gnolls for land, solving that dillema. Meanwhile the drow and the illithids are at a standoff, the illithids could easily wipe out the drow, hands down, but the casualties and economic strain would cause serious backlash from such a war. The drow are convinced they have the upper hand but they feel that they too can suffer huge casulties. The random factor comes in with the giants, if the giants were to ever make a successful assault on Morderhiem the drow would seize the opportunity in a second, and we would have a huge war on our hands."
"Now, with all this in mind, the veil needed a way to neutralize the threat of giant invasion, if they did this they could easily monopolize the entire defence system. During some other event during his, presumably younger, years... I can't say what the exact details are since they're hinted in another tome... Ph'ank Pharaz came across some town, somewhere, while he was still in his years of doing actual patrol work. This town was uninhabited by orcish guard, yet the people didn't flee to Morderhiem. Finally figured out it has something to do with inquistion, so he sent spies.
Something happenned, but the result was, the town was under a low level mind control set on by some sort of magic called "The Taint", it twisted and disfigured those with prolongued exposure to it, turning them into monsters. He felt that his answers to the giant threat could be solved with the taint."
"Skip ahead a year or so and he managed to get some of maesters and magi to figure out how to make the taint work in a way that gave him mind control over those exposed to it. He then used this to brainwash a tribe of orcs near the mountain region to defend the mountains for him. He found though that 'the taint' when taken away from it's natural habitat tends to dissolve away, so he continually had to send people to steal some of this 'Taint', which is never truly described."
"Eventually he made his own mock taint, however it could only be grown in some sort of secret lab located in the basement of his private villa. The last few months discuss how the orcs, while many are deformed and demented beyond recognition, he noticed a few orcs that were affected differently, rather than grotesque mutations they had started becoming something akin to Black Orks used by Inquisition..."
"That's where the journal ends.", Soloman cautiously hands you back the journal, "...be careful he says." Then he sits in his chair hands clasped in silence. You get the feeling that you should probably leave, now that the former mirth in the room is now filled with a looming sense of dread.

Ok, I hate to bring this up in the middle of gaming but this is relevant to both RPGguy and the Nvlutz.
I didn't look over the Derro character before because I hadn't heard of that type of creature and assumed it was from some obscure book or something, thus I assumed you both knew what you were doing when deciding to allow/make this character.
Please correct me if I'm wrong but now that I've found the Derro is on the SRD, his character sheet is grossly broken. I don't know if this is a standard Derro or a weakened Derro or something but here's a few points of interest-
Derro :: d20srd.org
First off, hit dice are always counted along side a level adjustment when creating a character. Less hit dice means you are not fully formed, and this is possible as per the Savage species rules, but the level adjustment is unavoidable. Thus, his minimum level with one hit dice, before ANY class, should be 3. I'm assuming this Derro is Sane or combat with him would have him looking at the "Confusion" spell chart every round, determining his actions. In which case, the level adjustment listed is +2.
Secondly, he has a +6 bonus to Charisma, so I'm unsure as to why his charisma is 4 right now. Maybe this was read wrong during the creation and switched with wisdom as it's actually the wisdom score that is the penalty, a -6.
Third, if I'm right about the hit dice, then he should have the blind fight feat and the improved initiative feat, as well as all the skills and abilities. If not, obviously that's not the case. However, considering he has all the spell like abilities, the resistances, immunities, and for the most part abilities, it is highly likely that he does possess the standard hit dice. This should make his current level 7. 3 for the hit dice, 2 for the level adjustment, and 2 for the class levels. This would also make his experience different, not only would it start out as 28,000/36,000, but considering the scale of monsters we're fighting are more akin to our level, he would be receiving far less than anyone else.
4th, in his character sheet, his size is listed as Medium. Derro are small. This induces a +1 to attack, +1 to AC, +4 to hide, 3/4 carrying capacity, and utilizes damage from the small weapons category, not the medium as listed in the character sheet, i.e. the light crossbow would be doing 1D6.
I'm sorry to say but this is an extremely overpowered character currently, and I was wondering why this was.

This is my first DnD game and I set up the character with DM's guidance. We kind of did a step by step thing through email before I joined.
So I will have to defer to him on these questions. Are you saying that I am currently over-powered or currently underpowered?
Also, the reason I set up my character sheet online was so that people could identify any problems. Not hide things, just to be clear.

I think I can clear atleast the charisma thing.
Derros are mad yes? they get a +6 for CHA but it cost -6 of the character WIS. but if the derros is turned sane he loses the CHA bonus and gains a +6 to WIS so thats why Ragh'nuul CHA is so low, since he is atleast more sane than a regular Derro. also remember he has a VERY nasty scar on his face
I quote from the same page you delivered
*The racial madness of the derro provides a +6 bonus to their Charisma scores and a -6 penalty to their Wisdom scores. A derro restored to sanity gains 6 points of Wisdom and loses 6 points of Charisma.
also rpgguy you should fix Ragh'nuul size from medium to small
