*breathes a sigh of relief* For a moment I was worried ! ;)

Actually, I do think that asking somebody how they are doing can be quite a loaded question, I tend to be quite cautious in answering that one usually..... ;)

@Dot: LOL :D

@Georgi: I feel we are kindred spirits in our academic lives...I have six hours until the conference I'm going to starts :D And I would probably still be writing on my Masters if it hadn't be required for the psychologist exam, and the exam was required for a job I had already signed, and the job was at the university hospital where my research lab is, so it was my only possibility to continue some research while doing my internship (required to get the licence) :D

Good luck with the exam!

@DW it's the quiet ones you have to worry about, you know ;) :D

And thanks, BTW... On the optimistic side, it's only... 15 hours until I finish all my exams :D

@Dottie: I notice you have changed your sig - I think it's quite an improvement to adjust it so it related to DW rather than to Foul! :D

The reason for my antipathy against that question comes from that I rarely see it asked honestly, And I really loath social rituals like that.

Its abit like undeserved praise wich alot of people seem to love handing out. It takes away from the times were you actually do want to praise someone, or do want to know how a person is feeling.

@CE: I figured Georgi should be able to admitt defeat by now. :)

ROFL :D In this case worse, since I know all the strategies I should use, so I have nothing to blame - I am forced to view it as a choice of my own will :D

I actually could, although it's less efficient than somebody else doing it. Seriously, have a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist education, and this type of therapy is less based on discussion and more focused on strategies, so it works well to apply it to oneself. However, I have tried - I think the result is not necessary to comment *cough*

I totally agree.... Once a complete stranger asked me....and being in a rather...ahem...foul.... mood.... I decided to concoct an advice-column style sob story..... :D The individual backed away really quickly..... Admittedly, I was being somewhat evil in doing that...but it does demonstrate the insincerity so often behind the question.......

I feel much the same way about things like mother's day....all too often marking the occasion seems to be expected rather than anything that is truly genuine.... IMO...why not do something nice for somebody spontaneously through the year....rather than observing a particular day just because your society advocates doing so.....

@CE so what you're saying is you need therapy? :D

@Dottie ok, ok, I give up, you almost piqued Foul's interest, but not quite ;) Maybe sometime I will change you from a puffin to something more suitable for lurking in the shadows :D

I know what you mean Dottus, and I actually agree with you. I just pester you for the fun of it :D and because I do honestly wish to know how people are doing when I ask.

Same thing with praise and affection. For instance, I never praise my students if they haven't done remarkable achivements, and I don't give compliments unless I really mean them.

Yes, that too.... If somebody I care about gives me a card I appreciate it and respond in kind, but it is never something I've ever expected.

Yes...same here....glad to know there are others who feel that way about the "how are you doing" question.... I have occasionally wondered if I am abnormal..... Actually I probably am anyway! :D

There are unfortunatly other concerns with the "how are you" question thats buildt more on my social inability then reasoning about honesty. Thats why im giving you trouble CE, but im sure you've figured that by now.

About the sig I made a claim that Foul wasnt as dangerous as he looked and wouldnt bother anyone who didnt provoke him, even if that one was a puffin. G forced me to prove it. :)
