Also, I might add, they spent a whole quarter in 2nd grade on just addition, and we learned Cursive near the end of 2nd which is kinda good. The printing they taught us in 1st was wrong, they made the letters funny and you couldn't tell them apart. We learned division in 4th grade. I remember in 2nd grade me and this one girl Jessica were so advanced we had to go in another room while the rest of the class worked... we would play this game that taught the names of all the bones, and by the end of 2nd we knew everything they would teach us in 4th grade science, so really... they expect you to go WAY too low, and the classes are so large the teachers can't always help you, thus many stay back... I lost many friends through stay backs, and knew an 8 year old girl in the 1st grade

This doesn't sound good

If this is common, I begin to understand why US student perform so low compared to students in other industrialized countries

It's strange though, because the US spends more money (counted in % per capita) on education than most Western countries.

I don't know if it is common in Rhode Island since I've never been to school in Rhode Island, but I do know that it is not common in Texas. Texas schools are good and the students actually learn stuff. I do know that Arizona schools are, in general, not good. I have a friend who is in 5th or 6th grade(forgot which). He comes over to my house on Sunday night and Wednesday night with his older brother. I was showing him SYM and after a short amount of time he stopped and decided to do something else because he couldn't read much of what had been said. Or rather, he could read most of it, but not easily and this was in a topic with stuff that should've been easy for him to read. I've noticed that in Arizona, they don't put much emphasis on reading. In Texas, the teachers and such encourage you to read, teaching the students how to enjoy reading. In Arizona, the kids don't have that desire to read. The majority of my classmates at the college I go to are Arizonans. Many of them know less than I knew in the 6th grade and a lot of them are on the level that my 6th grade classmates in Texas were on in 6th grade. I find it sad that so many college kids should really be just starting Junior High...
