very true, although you know the horror movie rule about cell phones: whenever you really need to use one - "no service available".

I love Roman Polanski's old movies--Repulsion and especially The Tenant. If you haven't seen 'em, you must check 'em out!

Hellraiser (the first one) was cool, but when they explained where the Pinhead man and all the rest of them came from, it took all the mystery and fear out of it for me. Strange that the sequels were more popular. I think people like too much explained. I love movies with ambiguous endings.

The Shining is still scary as hell. Just the opening with that intense music where they're driving to the Overlook is really scary.

I hate funny scary movies--like Nightmare on Elm Street--because they're not scary at all.

The first time I saw Angel Heart, it scared me. Jacob's Ladder was cool, too.

I know there's more, I just can't think of them now...

Voodoo - I thought that the first Nightmare on Elm Street was scary though, the way that it played on never knowing if you're awake or asleep. I haven't seen the movie since 198-? though so.

I totally agree about the shining - there is a sense of menace and danger in every frame of the movie.

At any rate, I have a beef about funny scary movies... I thought that one of the reasons that Blair Witch was so popular was that it was ambiguous and tried to be a real horror film. I still think it ultimately sucks, but it showed how hungry the public is for real horror.

I completely agree about the funny/scary genre, "Scream" itself was not completely worthless but horror is not funny. Similarly, the action/horror genre is questionable. I was just watching "Aliens" and found it strangely dated and lame, while I feel that the original "Alien" still holds up, partly because Ridley Scott is the boss, and partly because it stays closer to the straight horror formula (sci-fi horror admittedly, but I don't really have a problem with that - look at both the original and remade "The Thing")

Now what about "The Blob" (original version) - that's a funny/scary movie, right?

The Blob--definitely funny/scary campy movie.

I forgot about Alien. I remember when I saw that when it first came out, I was gripping the armrests of my seat the whole time--it was definitely scary.

Invaders from Mars was scary, and so was Body Snatchers.

No one had talked about Sci-Fi horror--glad you brought it up.

I agree with you here - ghosts, spirits, and other "mystical", "unexplained" stuff probably scares you more when you are a child or young teenager, whereas the more psychological stuff might scare adults more. Many of my friends found movies like "Fatal attraction" or "Bitter Moon" scary.

Actually, I was terrified watching "Dambo" for the first time (I was about 7). because, marching pink elephants didn't have eyeballs! Each elephants only had a pair of hole on their face, and that was really, really scarely.

I think some of Hitchc0ck's movies are scarely, too. Particularly the Bird.

Remember the Dancing Bear on Captain Kangaroo? He scared me--had no mouth!!!
