I've bought some of those for my wife as holiday gifts in the past. She treasures her coffee and the addicting drugs they provide. :)

To be honest, I find the flavor of a very good coffee mildly enjoyable, but I'm probably missing something since my sense of smell is incredibly poor. A lifetime of sinusitis will do to you. I've offered to work for a new nose, or better still, a fresh pair of lungs, but so far, no takers. The ingrates.

No reason to be drinking bad coffee on scientist's salary! Roast some at home and then bring it to lab..I imagine they have a spot for a coffee maker?
Scientists worldwide unfortunately have lousy salaries relative to their education and work load. The average salary for a scientist in the US is about €60000/$85000 a year and in EU €38000/$55000. Living in LA is horrendously expensive, especially housing. We pay more rent here than other Americans, save NYC, do for their mortages. Thus the bad coffee!

A coffee roaster is definitely out of my budget here in LA, and to make a good caffè latte I would also need a good espresso machine, which costs a fortune. In addition, I'm not a good barrista - it takes skill to make good coffee! However, I have a coffee maker and my tenant has a grinder, so if I could just find some beans that were cheaper than the $20/pound we buy now, I could at least make decent café crèmè. So thanks for the link!

@CE,
$20 for a pound of coffee?

Ouch! We only buy Fair Trade, Organic coffees, and they run at around $15 per pound here. This is still pricey, but $20.. Yikes!

I do second the suggestion of a French Press as well. They're fairly inexpensive, quite simple to use, and they make a nice brew.. strong and rich, without the nasty bitterness you often get with regular coffee makers.

I don't like coffee, or actually I do. I love it in candy, ice cream, with a sufficient amount of ethanol added or even the arabic variant. I don't like the bitter watery drink that most people call coffee though.

Tea on the other hand... life would not be worth living without it.

Hmmm, it is a cheaper option isn't it... :D

Approach. I have no idea what beans they use. It is a very strong coffee, without any taste of water and for some reason with high viscosity, and often taken with massive amounts of sugar.

There is beans that have the same name yes, but it was not the beans I were referring to, and I can bet my head that it was not what C Elegans was referring to either.

I like mine strong but with milk and sugar. Sometimes prefer coffee flavoured hot sweet milk though....More like a latte then an Americano.

Also prefer Sega Fredo coffee too.
