I think Salvatore took Wulfgar down for the same reason Hickman & Weis killed Sturm: he is the most expendable. Let's face it, he's not going to kill Drizzt, plus the other characters revolve around him. He can't stop the budding romance between the dark elf and Cattie-Brie, Regis is too much fun, and Bruenor is Drizzt's link to his past. In the party dynamic, Wulfgar is the odd man out. Sure, he can beat the hell out of anyone who comes near him, but so can Bruenor and Cattie-Brie. Plus, in making the barbarian so vulnerable and feral, Salvatore got to delve into another character than Drizzt and tell a different kind of story.
As our friend Gaxx_Firkraag said, in Spine of the World, we got to see Wulfgar begin to redeem himself and regain some of his humanity. I have a feeling that in the next Salvatore book Sea of Swords, we'll see Wulfgar again and hopefully he will rejoin his friends.

Not such a leap, when you think about it. Nightcrawler kinda looked like a dark elf, except for the hands, feet and tail, lol. Both were very agile. Mostly though, their character was the same. Outcasts, but they had accepted it and were very stoic about it. Both were extremely honorable and honest. Maybe it's just me. </STRONG>
I hadn't really thought about it til now, but yeah, they are a lot alike. One of my reasons for liking Drizzt is that I relate to him. The idea of being forced into being an outcast because you refuse to conform to the ways of people you don't agree with thing is definitely not new to me.
I'm sorta obessed with the Drow, also. I got hooked on them when reading about QiluƩ in Silverfall: Stories of the Seven Sisters.
That's why I bought The Dark Elf Trilogy, which of course, got me hooked on Drizzt.

I think I really like Drizzt because he is the type of character that I play in DnD. Always, I am the social outcast, who is often mistrusted. I fight for the greater good, and I have insane luck with rolling dice. Like him, I rarely lose. The only difference is, is that I am not Elven, at all. I'm Dwarven!

I like using Half-Elven Rangers in BG and IWD because of Drizzt. I even made an IWD party that consisted of Briza, Vierna, Drizzt, Dinin, Maya, and Zaknefein. That party didn't work out to well, though. My IWD Trilogy-based party was only moderately better...

Hullo.
I used to like Drizzt because the first TSR books I read were the Dark Elf Trilogy. And then I expanded my horizons and started to hate Drizzt! lol Too goody gooody for my taste. I moved to Dragonlance and as much as I dont like Tanis (for the same reasons) I loved Raist and Caramon. And then, o revelation, I started to read Elaine Cunningham's books. Fell in love with her character, Elaith Craulnober. I never liked evil characters before but the way the author portrays him, it's priceless. Needless to say I simply hated what Greenwood made of him in Silverfall, ICK!
