I have a copy of the DMG now and would be willing to DM an online game if there are enough players to play. It would be in the Forgotten Realms setting but I don't know what sort of chat room we'd use. Anyways, if anyone wants to play let me know.

IMO, AOL Instant Messenger would be the best choice. It's also the only one on which I could participate. Y!M and MSN Messenger don't have the dice rolling(at least, I don't think they do). ICQ crashes my computer. And I can't stand mIRC(or whatever it's called).

I have AIM, though I don't know how to use dice rolling for it. I think 4 characters would be the best. If you're interested in playing just post the times you can play and whatever character you want to play.

I think I posted how to do the dice rolling on the first page of this topic, but I'll post it again for quicker reference.

//roll-dice#-sides# <~~replace # with whatever number of dice and sides you want to a maximum of 999 dice with 15 sides or 15 dice with 999 sides. I don't remember which right now.

//roll just gives you the auto of 2D6.

This only works in AIM chat rooms, it doesn't work in the IM windows.

OMG....I havent ever thought of this..GREAT IDEA!!

I haven't played in a long arse time...usually play pc RPGs and sum TFC..but man I would bust out my old books for this...used to have sum major experience DMin'..and have ran many large campains such as Waterdeep, Ravenloft, Greyhawk, Vault of the Drow, Queen of the Demonweb Pits, Dragonlance and several FR settings...ahhh brings back old memories :)

I think I even still have sum Warhammer stuff.../me checks...yep, 40k and Realm of Chaos...wo0t wo0t now that's sum fun ;)

my suggestion for doing an online chat session...scrap the AIM...use mIRC..it's way better and perfect for this...goto www.mIRC.com and then come find me on gamesnet #-SoD- <----TFC clan but i'm often there and would be stoked to show anyone how to use irc chat and why it's perfect for this and I do mean PERFECT! Who knows...maybe I could play a game or two.../me thinks...89-90 was last time I played so I'm rusty for sure....anyways drop by irc and chat ;)

BTW..I read back and see that Fogwraith has an irc script for dice rollin using a bot...THAT MAKES IT ALL THE MORE PERFECT...if he can't be found I know it could be worked out fairly easily.....the possiblities with irc are endless here...peeps from all round the world playing in games, multiple rooms with multiple campains, locked games, clan and guild settings and compitions...on and on...The rooms are set up with a personal host for each room and the owner (DM) would have total control of the room. This will limit spam and bring order to the game in a chaotic situation..and on and on. I'm totally serious bout helping with irc and this could really breath life back into AD&D for many of us...

*sigh* If this AD&D In Chat Rooms thing does end up being done in mIRC, then ya'll will just have to count me out of it. :( Not only do I just dislike mIRC itself, but it also messes up my comp big time.
<STRONG>BTW..I read back and see that Fogwraith has an irc script for dice rollin using a bot...THAT MAKES IT ALL THE MORE PERFECT...if he can't be found I know it could be worked out fairly easily</STRONG>
From what I've seen of mIRC, AIM is a heckuva lot simpler so the dice rolling is most likely simpler and easier to use...
<STRONG>.....the possiblities with irc are endless here...peeps from all round the world playing in games, multiple rooms with multiple campains, locked games, clan and guild settings and compitions...on and on...The rooms are set up with a personal host for each room and the owner (DM) would have total control of the room. It's really easy to deal with 'uninvited guests' in an AIM chat. Everyone puts him on ignore. Uninvited guests are rare, though.

Me and some friends do freestyle RPGs via AIM all the time. In fact, we were gonna play AD&D via AIM but we just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Anyway, if ya'll choose to do this on AIM, count me in; but, like I said, if ya'll choose to do this on mIRC, count me out.

I don't know how serious you guys are,
but i do roleplay p&p once a week(3rd Ed)
and also DM.
I would love to play or DM.
But the problem is with all of us from
diffrent countries, therefore diffrent
hours available for internet use,
also some people work i imagine,
so first of all people got to say,
what days they can play, what hours
of those days, (local time, CET time,
some kind of referance), and any kind
of personal preferences like that.
So should we start by saying days & hours
to see which people fit in the same groups.
But i'm sure you guy's know all about these
problems since McBane and bdduke have
posted similar issues/problems.

I have had experience with both AIM and mIRC and I can understand how AIM is easier to use, especially concerning dice rolling. Yet I own 3 irc rooms, 1 is pub and 2 are private. The private rooms are passworded and there are no unwanted guest, period. Comands are fast and simple once u learn them, !kb ]SoD[FudD <---bans and kicks, that easy and instantly. Scripts that allow me to show off my winamps or lets peeps know what TFC server I'm playing on with ip, ping and other info, these are just a few of the things that can be done. IRC is a bit complicated but once you learn it the experience is way more enjoyable. Additionally, owner/coowner/masters are the only ones who would really need to know how to run the room for the average person they just gotta join a room and be ready to play. Personally I wont get near anything that has to do with aol or icq....both had my comp running at record low speeds and record high crashes..both are unistalled...The reason I dig mIRC is that the possiblities are endless, bots can control spam and with scripts anything is possible. BTW...ignoring in irc is as easy as hitting "ignore"...ya i agree its more complicated and takes more to learn but thats because its better ;) I often idle in my irc chat rooms, sumtimes for several days and my comp runs flawlessly, for me the program does nothing to interfear with my comps performance...and as I previously stated the owner/coowner/masters in irc rooms have control so I just don't see how unwanted peeps would be a prob. I often !kb unwanted spammers in my pub room and having DMed and owning irc rooms it seems like the perfect venue to hold a session. With irc you have a chanserv in the room all the time so the room is active with or without a game. Making it a great place to play (it seems) or simply talk bout the game. This would allow peeps from anywhere to hold sessions in these rooms no matter whut time of day..it would be as easy as idlin' there till sum peeps show and then throwing together a quick session. With the bot rollin dice it is np...plus the bot(s) can be scripted to do things...such as respond to player actions or DM commands...sum friends in #kanbs run a trivia bot several times a week, we basically play trivial pursuit with the bot in full control. It asks questions (hard ones), gives hints, tracks time and keeps score, including current score rankings. If you havent seen what is possible in irc then I can't suggest anything except droping by #-SoD- and saying hello...

If you have already played using AIM then you do have an advantage on me, I have never played AD&D in a chat room but I do have experience with all the discussed topics just not all together....it's not like i'm going to dust off the old books and get more irc rooms but I would be interested in helping anyone to do that. I can teach you some basic things bout irc that would make it easier to use....and it could become very popular...

On a final note..the issues of time and locations are not that big of a prob, I have ran an international TFC clan with members in Europe. When it's 8pm in London it's 11am-2pm here in USA and when it's 8am in Austraila it's 8-10pm here depending on your time zone....in actuallity IRC helped us have a place to meet and mingle with our oversea friends..that is why having a permanate room that is always up could be perfect, weekend sessions could easily have peeps from many diffrent countries playing as long as they all speak the same language.

As for the comp trouble thing, mine is opposite. mIRC caused my comp to run very slow and crash more. However, I have AIM running all the time, as well as MSN Messenger, and usually Y!M, too and they don't cause problems with my comp. I don't have ICQ because it crashed my computer everytime I tried to open it.

Back in spring, me and these friends I mentioned earlier were doing an ezboard based RPG. We did the RPing on AIM, but posted the chat log and recorded the data(how much GP we had, what items we had, etc) on the EZboard that one of my friends had set up specifically for this purpose. It was similar to D&D and, in many ways, based on D&D; but it was a dif style from D&D as far as how it was done. We didn't bother with dice rolling stuff. Same with our 'freestyle' RPGs, only not posting on an ezboard. Anyway, on ths ezboard RPG, one of my friends would always have his computer on AIM and keep the chatroom we RP'd in open. 'Re-opening' a chatroom, though, is as easy as naming the 'new' chat with the same name used for the 'old' chat. And if you pic a name that's strange enough, you decrease the chances of unwanted guests. (Good example is 'II111III111IIIIII11I'(in AIM, 1s and Is look identical), we used one like this to keep one of my friends' little brother outta the chat because he kept inviting himself and annoying us. Other good examples are 'AAKdhgalkea AHeka42' ;) )
<STRONG>If you have already played using AIM then you do have an advantage on me, I have never played AD&D in a chat room but I do have experience with all the discussed topics just not all together....it's not like i'm going to dust off the old books and get more irc rooms but I would be interested in helping anyone to do that. I have experience RPing on AIM(been doing so for almost 1½ years now), but the closest I've come to playing AD&D is BG1 and IWD. We started to play AD&D in a chat once, but it was too late at night and all we got done was creating characters. As experienced as I am with AIM, I'm equally lacking in experience playing AD&D.

welp...that sux d0od :(
you are one of the first peeps I have heard that has trouble with irc...unlike icq there may be sum reasons why it runs so poopy for you..your location, connection, where you downloaded it from or even possibly your os...none the less I know where your coming from cause ICQ rotted my comp till i deleted it...

on the other hand it sounds like when you play D&D that it's fairly simple....that's koo cause the game can be to involved and to time consuming...yet on the other hand a skilled DM will entrall you with his campain...the best DMs can also tell sum mean stories ;) So in that regaurd i think that if you put a good DM who was experienced with irc and let him run the show it would be very enjoyable...a master of irc chats can amaze you..combined with a skilled DM and i think it would be very impressive...personally the largest game i ever Dmed was with seven players...but if a chat was used it would seem that you could get games up to 30+ peeps as long as the DM was skilled and in control of the chat room...imagine taking part in a quest that involves a small militia traveling to the Underdark to stop the dark dwellers from unleasing an unholy power upon the world. They have the intention of blacking out the sun and forever releasing them selves from the underworld...or perhaps particapating in the dragon wars of the Dragonlance saga where you and your friends could be battling me and my friends...in those types of campains it would be easy for a skilled DM to bring in new players, say as they show up into the chat room their character enters the campain....sounds fun to me :)

but at the same time sounds like alot of work and i'm sure there would be plenty of probs to deal with...

anyways....i'm not going to bust anything out as i'm busy enuff with out a 9th hobby...lol altho if sumone is interested in checking out irc for the purpose of AD&D gaming then i'd be happy to help...or maybe sumone already has in which case i'd like to stop by their room and check it out sum time ;)

This all sounds really interesting and I would like to get in on this awesomeness!
I think that AIM would work well for it. I couldn't DM because Im just starting to play 3rd edition [i've been playing AD&D my whole life]. I play wizards and thiefs well, but I've also been a cleric and fighter . So if anyone could give me some additional information either AIM: nealXface or EMAIL: oneal_chenault@swbell.net :)

Very interesting.

It is VERY hard to find people that are actually serious about playing D&D irl. It sucks because i'm really into it. I'm generally a ranger or a rogue type class so if any parties are interested email me at shadowofheart@live.com.

Thank yuh much.

I found a program that was made for playing D&D http://www.homebase-kice.com/dnd_chat/.
All it needs is an IP adress of the DM and you can play.

Also, if anyone wants to play on AIM message me at devilboy0808
