I believe if you have Red Dragon Scale and rings of protection equipped when importing your char into ToB you can use them together. If you unequip one of them after starting ToB then you cannot re-equip...

Yes, you're right. And should you start a new game with ToB installed, the armor is already changed. Actually, this is how a magical armor is supposed to work so I don't complain - and it's still a good armor.
