He's actually a lot older than Paradise Lost... The Book of Enoch is probably one of the oldest references, and at this point he wasn't related to the devil, but one of the fallen angels. (The suffix -el actually means God, so names that end in -el usually started out as angels.)
In I Enoch, Azazel taught man how to make weapons, among other things, see
here. He meets a rather sticky end in chapter 10.
Gilgamesh is an ancient Mesopotamian hero, the Noah-figure in an earlier flood story, among many other heroic deeds... Also
Marduk was the god who was responsible for the subjugation of the Leviathan (the primordial beast of the abyss), thereby creating the heavens and earth.

@ Georgi
True, but I think P.L. is the first to have him as standard bearer.
(I could well be wrong, I lost my copy with the notes I got that from)
@ Frogus
How about Jormungand (the midgard serpent of Norse mythology)
Or is that a clichéd boat name? I dunno.

I must warn you, the US government told me if I name another rubber raft Weasel and start to Cuba again, they will sink it again and make sure to hit me this time as well.

*Makes a boat, names it Weasel and sets off to Cuba*
What can I say? I'm a firm believer in assist-suiciding.

How bout "The Canadien Fishslapper"?
Quoted by Weasel
That movie caused me to miss summer camp in Kentucky.
Hmmm, a Kentucky summer camp. Perhaps its best, as you may have had "Uncle Bloodstalker" as your counselor.

@Weasel:
I've actually been white-water rafting on the Chatooga river in Georgia where they filmed the rafting scenes in Deliverance, and it's a blast (and not because rednecks chase you through the rapids). They have a lot of Class III and IV rapids, along with a few Class V (FYI-Class VI is the highest and most dangerous rating). After one of the rapids, there is a place called "Deliverance Rock", where you think you'll start to hear "Dueling Banjos", but thankfully, there was no one around.
@Yshania:
Does the Thames spontaneously burst into flame? Until several years ago (when the EPA stepped in and made steel mills clean up their operations), portions of the Ohio River use to combust if the right (wrong?) mix of chemicals was present in high enough concentrations. Surely, whatever ails the Thames can't be worse than that.
@frogus:
What kind of boat is this again? If it's just a fishing boat with an outboard motor, you could name it "My Yott", so when you go to pick up girls, you can say, "How would you like to go for a ride in My Yott?" and just don't tell them you have a whaler instead of a 90 foot yacht.

Yup. The river sequences were filmed in northern Georgia. Jeff Foxworthy had a little schtick in one of his stand-up routines where he said, "Did you know that they're having some of the [1996 Atlanta ] Olympic events on the same river where they filmed
Deliverance? If Ned Beatty can't make it down the river, some Dutchman in a Speedo don't stand a chance."
However, if you want some good whitewater rafting, come on over to West Virginia (the heart of Appalachia); in September the Gauley River is the best in the country . . . and if you thought the folks in Georgia were scary, the state motto here is, "West Virginia: We're one big, happy family . . . Really!"
Seriously, though, the rafting here is 5 times better than the Chattooga River in Georgia, which is a pretty good river to run if you're into whitewater rafting (plus, West Virginia needs your tourism dollars more than Georgia).

Maybe WK means Peculiar and Enigmatic Threads?
@HLD: Nice advice, I'll remember that. I'm actually into white (and black

) water rafting myself, preferrably in kayaks.
