And for those who aren't near any hills or live in Holland, there's always the electronic treadmill, a device that was originally created by Torquemada. My wife and I use those at a nearby gym club whenever we get a chance (which isn't often enough). When that incline starts to rise it's easy to imagine that you're trying to run uphill in San Francisco.

Yes, I've used those too, I absolutely hate them but they are good exercise. I usually recommend people who want to start climbing or hillwalking to use them and then gradually put on weight in a rucksack while walking in them.
