I'm passing comment on the cold war here.

The major threat was from an irrational Soviet first strike - a distinct possibility. SDI showed the Soviets that they could not afford to keep up the cost of the "defence" race that would render any "missile gap" irrelevant.

Indeed, SDI removes the possibility of striking for fear of a counter-attack with impunity.

I believe Bush's argument now is that some hateful nation with a rocket and crude nuke would love to pop one on the US. A fact backed up by most nations indifference to 9/11.

The sad thing in my opinion is that it all sounds so childish yet they are dealing with all of our lives, it strikes me as an arguement over whoever has the biggest toy.

And with that bogus commentary I must bid thee good night :) - Take it easy :)
I'd have to get drunk every night and talk about virility...And those Pink elephants I'd see.

it was primarily massive military spending that sent the deficit skyrocketing. Secretary of the Navy John Lehman wanted a 600-ship fleet, which is astronomically high considering not only its initial costs, but also its maintenance and personnel costs. SDI was also very expensive, as were projects like the M1A1 Abrams main battle tank, the various USAF stealth projects, the AH-64 Apache, the F-18E/F Super Hornet and the Bradley IFV, which were all projects that hit their stride during the 1980s.

I don't mind paying for my rights and my freedom. Our young men and women who volunteer to serve, are the shield that protects your and my rights and freedoms. How difficult would their job be if it wasn't for the weapons listed above?

Freedom is the reason many people from different cultures want to come to our country. Our rights and freedoms are what allow us to post our opinions on this forum. We should never forget this. If it costs me a few hundred dollars more a year in taxes, I'll gladly pay it (and I am by no means a rich or well-to-do person).

Freedom and a defensive (sometimes projected) cordon of ICBM's, tanks and planes are worth paying for. I'd emmigrate to the US given half a chance and become a citizen.
