Um, when I visited the States three years ago the guy that showed us around told us about some building there that was 'sooo' old. (Don't really remember how old, but it was a joke compared to some European buildings) anyway, he meant it as a joke. As did I.

BTW I always wondered how Arnie Schwarzenegger could walk through (as in through the wood) doors and all

but some of the American doors seem to be made out of cardboard, no offence meant, just an observation.(locks are really small too...)

You are not far off, there is a trend toward using reclamed wood products (read: cheap) My house is very old (LOL) its Victorian and the outer doors are 2" thick oak. Inner doors are 1.5" southern yellow pine. This is probably a bit closer to what you are used to.

BTW American love it when a Euro visits, and immediately becomes an authority on the country

Hmmm, all the Americans ask me when they come here is if I own wooden shoes and live in a windmill. Both: no, that wouldn't be comfortable.

It's sweet how they suck up to you in US stores too... (in Holland be happy if they ask if you need any assistance, in the US they asked us how our trip had been, when we were going back, if we liked it here and so on...) That still doesn't mean I'm buying there though, I'm Dutch and therefor Greedy as hell...

Woops, I guess I took that too seriously. I've been to Europe a couple of times, and any American that has experienced REAL historical buildings wouldn't give much credit to our cardboard contraptions.

But, not all American stuff can be busted through by Arnie's bulging biceps. I lived in Los Angeles for awhile, and I saw 10+ story buildings built in less than a couple of months. And those were built to withstand Earthquakes! No historical value, but good engineering.

Where did you travel in the US? I've been to 35+ states and lived in more than a handful.

Here's my Heathrow airport story: I am exchanging my pounds for canadian money (look at all the pretty colors!) and the American in front of me is yelling at the girl for giving him coins. I guess she was supposed to round up? He ends by throwing the coins at her and stomping off. I get up to the window, and in my best southern drawl, "Americans, sheesh." She laughed so hard the manager came over to see what she was up to.

Been to Seattle and drove around a bit there in a horrible recreationvehacle as you call them... Had plastic on the floor. And we stayed at a campingsite that warned for bears, I loved it, my sis was scared... Never saw any bears tough. Did see a lot of big trees in a rainforest thingy and visited Mount saint Helen's (spelling, arg...

)

And I've been to Tampah Florida, nice heat, stayed in a friends house with a pool in the yard, that's where the thin doors story comes from.

When I came back to Holland after my vacation in the US I realised for the first time what a small flat country it really is.

I disagree on the statement that they must be men. I wouldn't doubt if money sometimes trumped hormones in this country. But, we also have other concepts like tipping (gratuity) and commission. Some places in Europe don't have that, and it makes a big difference in the type (quality?) of service that you receive.

Where i work you'd have to do the limbo let alone bend over backwards for reasonable tips. and before you ask, its not a personal thing- nobody ever gets more than 50p (about 1 dollar) in total at the end of a night. waitressing sucks...
