You have to be really patient most of the time though.
Indeed! Also, I found that more than a few enemies were totally immune to the jesters song.

Yes, and in these cases I usually improvised. In SoA it would be usually just buffing myself and using spells like a normal bard (maybe Cloak of he Sewers too), and in ToB it would be Time Traps and Chromatic Orb (or something along those lines).
There are so many under-rated low level mage spells that can be really useful, and soloing a Bard really helps you learn these ones. Like, uh, Blur. I don't know why but for some reason it stacks in my game so using it multiple times really helps me not get hit by anything. Probably a glitch though...

My favourite class, or the class that I normally choose, is fighter/thief. Thieving abilities are highly useful, as are a fighter's skills. I do enjoy being a mage, as well.

Wow, i'm shocked. I thought i was the only person who loved bards...
They can be decent in combat, with mithril chainmail+4 they are tough, and the occasional support spell is well nice.
I've got no idea about bg2, but as i'm getting it in a few days i'm very excited...

Sorry but I just have to get this off of my chest: It's Wizard.. WIZARD! *lets out a deep breath*
Mages are the non-specialist wizards while specialists (conjurors, enchanters, etc) are specialist wizards. It's the WIZARD class.
A lot of people seem so.. mage prejudiced..
This has a little bit to do with the fact that I really like Transmuters.
..anyway..
I generally choose classes I like not those which are the best. Specialists/single classes over dual/multiclass.
In BG1 I like to play a ranger (elven). I tried a transmuter, but wizards are seriously gimped by the low number of spells. Of course, it kind of reflects the AD&D game.. the higher level they get the more powerful they become (proportionally.. compared to other classes).

I played Archer quite a couple of times. Fighter (without XP cap for cheese power) would be my first choice, but then thieves, bards, mages too can be very exciting (though soloing is HARD). I haven't tried a druid yet (through a full game)....

Fighter/Thief is my favourite. Advanced Weapon Specialising and high HPs are vital from the Fighter, and Theiving is quite fun. Also, you get the NPCs at a higher level so less time is wasted fighting respawning creatures.

I must admit that in BG1 my favorite class is a fighter. I like to stay in the frey of combat slicing and dicing
Also that goes well, because in BG1 I feel there are plenty of decent NPCs, so I don't have to make a character of certain classes just to have that class in the party.

@Xandex - if you play a good aligned party and dont want the weak Khalid, you have to play a fighter yourself

Hmm nah, Kivan is quite good frontliner too. So are Yeslick and Coran. Also I once got thru BG with my PC cleric as the only frontliner.

I used to play bg with a fighter, but thinking on dual to mage on SoA.
The good thing about fighters on BG is cause they dont die when a single kobold fire an arrow on him.

Fighter for me. I almost duel classed to a cleric, and for a while I considered duel classing to a mage, but I decided not to. KHalid is alright, though it sometimes gets annoying, because half the time he's the one who gets killed.

Heh. Fighter/Mages are about the best warriors o' the game, says I; Fighters that can use spells like armour, shield, mirror image, and some 'o those melee spells that wizards never get to use for fear of being cleaved in half... Shocking Grasp, Ghoul Touch, and such. And in BG2, stoneskin, contingency and some elven chainmail make ya more invincible.

Not to insult any fighter/mages out there, but IMHO fighter/clerics or cleric/rangers are at least as powerful as the fighter/mage.

Mages and sorcerors are wizards..
Wizards->Mages-> Conjurors etc, and they are specialist mages.
Yes specialist *mages*

he's right especially with the cleric/rangers not only do they have better fighting skills than a plain cleric they also get cleric AND druid spells i would suggest dual classing from ranger to cleric at levle 5 and putting the ranger profficiancies in blunt weapons and sling
oh and i think they can wear bigger armor and use better weapons than a regular cleric can
