1.AK: Avtomat Kalashnikova



You seem to know your stuff, and I'm therefore somewhat cautious in correcting you, but I'm rather certain it's Kalashnikov, as opposed to Kalashnikova. It's named after Mikhail Kalashnikov, who was a soviet arms engeneer. Dictionary.com also says that it's called kalashnikov.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, I've seen the weapon being called Kalashnikova on more than one place, but since now I've always assumed that people didn't know what they were talking about...

Would I be right in saying that it becomes Kalashnikov in translation, or in changing of language (we're not really changing the word, are we?).

As it stands, my interest in weaponry is based upon the Napoleonic era. Chanak, I noticed you said something about Percussion caps? Do you know the technology behind it? It's amazing to think that you could consider it as the basis for the development of the early revolver (that was only just being developed at the time, I believe...)

No, Nippy, I actually didn't consider the percussion pistol as anything but just very cool. ;) I haven't looked into that issue very deeply, beyond being nominally aware that at various times, different technologies were indeed contemporaries.

My intial interest in weaponry began simply enough, stemming back to the arms of the Roman legionnaire circa 100 and on. I haven't had the time to pursue these things as I would like to...and I have yet to obtain a good replica of a gladius, one of my favorite Roman weapons. :cool:

Add a pilum to that wish list. :D

No. Male slavonic last names usually end in -ev or -ov, while female ones end in -eva or -ova, and since the gun is named after its creator I'm inclined to think it's also called Kalashnikov in Russian.

Unless of course, Mikhail Kalashnikov named it after his wife... ;)

It's simple to get your toque. You have to go out, drink a keg of Molsen Canadian on your own, sleep with a bear, and kill a women with your bare hands... OR something to that extent :D

As for weaponry, give me blades any day of the week. I find guns are a very impersonal means of dispersing death, not like swords, where someone actually had to have resolve, and a stomach to witness the expression on his oppenants face. More brutal, but at the same time, more human.

Granted, I don't condone killing eople with them, I just have a nice little collection of both Oriental and European blades, my favorite being my six foot long Gaelic Greatsword :D

@Aegis: Check to some of those requirements, save for sleeping with a bear, and harming a member of the opposite sex. How about if I just sleep with a member of the opposite sex, kill a bear with my bare hands, and send a case of Moosehead to Thug's house compliments of SYM's loving and caring Canadians. :D

Im currently working on building my own sword, but i dont know if should try to layer the metal by bending it over and over again, or if i should go for the japanese way. decisions decisions.


I looked up the proper name for the AK family, and the TRUE Name for it is: AVTOMATA KALSHNIKOVA

"avtomat" roughly translated means automatic. the "V" in avtomata is actually a "U" how wonderful.

I once tried to translate the writing on a soviet surplus box of 7.62*54R, it didnt work too well, i only was able to decipher the word "round".


I should try and learn more about other guns. I already know every working part on an AK, from the bolt and carrier all the way down to the stock screws and rivets.
