I hav read the books.

He jusgt doesn't seem to be a real villian to me. He;s too weak. The ring was the real villian with him, it controlld him. He didn't really do stuff of his own will.

IMO, he was a villain against his will.
He tried being good, (un)fortunately, things happend that made him betray Frodo again.
Don't forget though, he murdered someone to get the ring in the first place.

I think he had evil inside him, the ring unlocked it. That's why it chose him.
