1. Transporting round manhole covers is easier, becuase they can be rolled.
2. And most important, because the holes are round.

does it have anything to do with salt? i think i remember that there where some question involving eggs that had salt as an solution(sp?)...
like what if you put salt under where your egg shall spin, and the salt kinda "holds" the egg in place
