it's strange no one mentioned deus ex... i still remember the menu music which i think is one of the best music i've heard in a game... rpg or no...
also liked the starting music of dungeon siege... a similar music is played at the starting video of ds2...
and the violene from arcanum... the overall music was excellent... loved it...

I think IWD 1 has an excellent score. Kuldahar's theme is hauntingly beautiful. My favourite track was the Battletheme in the corridor on your way to Yxunomei (sp?). NWN's score was good, but not quite as. KoTOR has excellent music, the first more than the second, but what would you expect when you mix Williams and Soule?
A less known RPG with great music, also by Jeremy Soule IIRC, was Revenant. Very good, new-age, Adiemus-like theme music. Think of it as Deionarra's Theme from Planescape, whose music was also excellent.
I also have to agree on Dungeon Siege's score, both installments. It was grand, it was sweeping, it was epic.
Several World of Warcraft themes are worth mentioning: the Expansion opening theme, Teldrassil theme and the music that plays in the courtyard of Shadowfang Keep.
Divine Divinity indeed has some good music pieces as well, even got some as mp3. But maybe I'm biased because that was a Belgian game.
Special praises, of course, to Nabuo Uematsu, for I think nothing has ever beat FF/Square-soundtracks. FFX soundtrack was a disappointment (as was the whole game), but FFIV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX and Chrono Trigger all have absolute gourgeous music. Who hasn't got goosebumps from Aria de Mezzo Carattere?
Now, for two non-RPG games, but with excellent music are Halo, which has a great title theme and Mechwarrior II Mercs and Mechwarrior IV Mercs: both have excellent rough Metal soundtracks.

Soundtrack? I'd have to say Icewind Dale has the best soundtrack ever.

my favorite music:
-the music in diablo1 in that village where you start to play,
-kotor1 in general is good, but the very best are the ambient and battle sounds when on taris,
-the ingame music from tes3:morrowind, thats just masterpiece,
-music from the final fantasy serial (on PS1), but the very best is the music from FF9, especially the beginning soundtrack in the menu screen,
-i am to lazy to think anymore
.

One of the best is the soundtrack from the beginning of TES4: Oblivion. I'm sure there are some which will disagree with me.

Diablo I Captured the mood so well, especially in Tristram.
Diablo II Kurast docks especially is a very fine piece.
Vampire tM Redemption I haven't even played this game, but still I listen to the music, some of the ambience is solid gold.
Vampire tM Bloodlines Rik Schaffer at Womb Music did a really great job on this game, I could easily trash all the licensed music and let him do the whole shebang. Still, the licensed music is great and well worth the game's price.
Fallout 2 The drumming ambience and chanting in Arroyo, the car theme and The Den, they all help to set the mood, but are not as much stand-alone musical pieces as the other game's music.

You mean the MMO? Because the only other RPG based on LotR I can remember is one on the SNES.

Well, there is another RPG version of the Lord of the Rings and it's titled 'The Third Age' or something which came out on the PS2 (or was it XBox?
). He could be referring to that, or the action-RPG adaptation of all three Lord of the Rings movies.

Best songs
The first three Final Fantasy games have some really good tuneage. In I, a personal fav is the Chaos Shrine theme. In II, I really liked the final credits song. In III, the Village of the Ancients had a pretty tune that I would hum along to. The Golden Sun series on GameBoy Advance has really good music, too. The lighthouse aerie song is especially pretty. It's a calm, gentle tune that is beautiful. And in Final Fantasy V, the Big Bridge song in the second world is really cool. Also, Pokemon XD, Diamond & Pearl, Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, Gold, Silver, and Crystal have good songs too. And even though it's not a RPG, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past has neat songs, like the Dark World Death Mountain theme and the song that plays after you beat Ganon and find the Triforce, in particular, are well done.

I concur about Link to the Past. I also liked the village tune there. and the Market Theme of Ocarina of Time.
FF, ofcourse, is a given when talking about game soundtracks.

Yeah, the ones that really sounded out at me were
BG1 - never played BG2 so I wouldn't know
Oblivion
IWD1 & 2
can't really remember NwN 1 & 2 since I was trying to pay more attention to the gaming but it seemed like it fit right in.

Denethorn wrote:Yet noone mentions the mighty Ultima. Some truly amazing tunes have been composed for it in its time. "Stones" by David 'Iolo' Watson has to be one of the most well-known game compositions in western gaming.
I second that, I think the most memorable for me where the Ultima games. It odd because the midi music was so limited compared to today's music but nothing since then has compared, so I guess it proves a great song is a great song eh?
Ultima III - VI the music was fantastic, I think my favorite was IV and V.
