Sorry to push the point, QuenGalad, But do you play games using only that name? Or is this purely a website [GB] name?
Or [more importantly] do you have a name for certain games? This is where I am going with this post.
Or is it that you always use the the QG name ? (which I remember was given to you by your infatuated admirer whom you decided was not for you ). [sorry about your father and the misogynistic posting...icky]
Your beer godess sounds like a winner!!
Okay back to my main point:
You see... I have to tweak my name and my character to the game storyline. It's complicated. It is my fulfillment of the game world that I am in. If there is a prophesy involved (and when is there not? Very Greek tragedy in that respect) , then that is another 'tweak'. Like in Morrowind I am Avane de Morrow (you played the game? you'll know why; and in BG series I am Athena (goddess [of course] ofwarrior and wisdom and daughter of a god) and in this scenario last name is Bloodmist (daddy was not a nice guy! Assume you know that game too)... good weekend. Hope to hear from you soon. A.
PS: Anyone else out therev have multiple personalities??? Let me know. Starting to save up for therapy...

Ahh, Avane, game names and not just GB handle. I see.
Already explained my GB name, for games though, I tend to tailor the name to the character, for example a Morrowind character I had was a Bosmer female named Jocasta, the male Khajit thief was named Lightfinger....
most characters almost name themselves as I seem to always have their backstory in mind and their names seem to come along with the story.
Although years ago I tended to play the BG series, with the same name for any male character I played no matter what class.

When you play a game, you play a role, you are not yourself. So it is ok to adjust your character depending on the role you have to play. I don't see it as multiple personnalities. I do it also.

There are dating threads? Wait, what the spork have I been doing here wasting my time playing and discussing games!?

"And so, they all fled to join dating threads, leaving only CE and Silur who from now on had the whole forum for themselves, and it was closed by angry net nannies within a week"
Well, I think it's pretty much a pointer of your roleplaying ability, to be able to pick a right name for different characters? I only use QG name for characters such as druids or rangers, because of it's meaning. It wouldn't go well with necromancer or barbarian, I think. I never pick the same name twice, and try to adjust it to the general atmosphere of the game. Sometimes names with meaning, sometimes not.
It is also important how shall the npc's speak to you. If you add a surname, and then, in every dialogue, you get "Hello, Waldo Coppercarrier!" (improvised name

) "My thanks, Waldo Coppercarrier!" "Waldo Coppercarrier, you're not dead!" it becomes quite silly.
So there's nothing to worry about, Avane
Edit: i just saw i never mentioned the name's meaning... It means "talking with trees". Hmm... on second thought, maybe the guy just thought me a bit loony?

Well, I suppose I could do a better job at explaining.
I'm a book nerd, specifically an English major book nerd. Although not English (or Dutch) in its origin, I have been a bit fascinated by the many adaptations in both story and illustration of Reynard the Fox, medieval folklore about the infamous trickster fox. The word trickster sort of stuck after TTLG's Thief, and kept I using it in a couple of online games. Whenever it was already registered I would resort to Tricky, which to my own surprise never seemed to be registered. Not even on overcrowded MMO servers.
Such was the case on this forum.

Don't worry DesR85, you know me when it comes to music.
Somebody

got the connection on my name.
@ Avane....yes Duane was the one.
back to topic.......@ QuenGalad.....I know what you mean I use to give my characters both names and quickly got tired of the "Waldo Coppercarrier" syndrome.... so now I only type in the one name, although in the backstory for my characters, they all have surnames.

Ah well, CE correct me if I'm off with this assessment, but over time the medical establishment has refined their understanding of the brain, mental health, the psyche, etc...so "multiple" personalities has come of its own in a condition called Disassociative Disorder (often the term "multiple" is tagged on there). Schizoid is a term which denotes schizophrenic tendencies or symptoms present along with another recognized disorder that seem to overlap with recognized forms of schizophrenia; so you would have something like "Schizo-affective Bipolar Disorder," describing the syndrome of someone diagnosed with BPD who also exhibits some symptoms of one of the schizophrenias. Yeah, it's all rather convoluted, but that's my understanding of it all.
So, do I believe people's gaming or internet alter-egos denote a possible case of disassociative disorder? Nah. Perhaps in the right individual it might be a sign, but in the case of diferrent "personalities" in the same individual, you normally see other things which denote the existence of that disorder. You would probably not recall your actions and activities while acting under the influence of one of your alter-egos. If you can recall it all clearly, why then, you're merely engaging in that most pleasurable of hobbies: role-playing. We did it as kids, and some of us still do it as adults.

Purrrrrr!!! Kit-kat, knew it would be Duane...
Hey Chanak (Derrida.../Mr Deconstruction...) disassociative disorder...no you'r'e right, it's like you said, just an immersion in the bath of the alternative world. Hey,life could be really boring, but we get to play with it.
QG, you came back too. So you do play around with your alter egos. Aha!
DesR85 'Egad' to you too, go on, just having fun.
Gilliat glad you reinforced my "I am not completely mad" status!
Tricky hope all works out with your re-mix of drinks for your mum. Also interested in Reynard folklore. I'm doing a deconstruct on the use of the word 'weird' seems first public usage in Shakespeares's Macbeth wherein the word is first used (the 'weird sisters' - who are the witches), and then the word came into common language and earned a cultural meaning. By the way I really liked when you said in explaining your name "...well you know it's...." Suppose got to be a native english speaker to get it.
PS: See you all after the Easter break, got essays to submit and exams coming up. Better exile GB for the next few weeks. Take care

I dunno, I've never played either. That would explain why people have started using it more and more in the past 8-10 years or so though I suppose. Previous to that, the closest I had come to seeing it was "Magus".

My own given name is obviously quite difficult for children to pronounce, since I have had one nickname for every child who has tried to pronounce it. Naffnuff is what my childhood friend and first girlfriend (at age five) used to call me, and since then it has always been engraved in my memory and very dear to me. I always use it for these occasions, so if you ever see it on some other site, you'll know it's me.

It is also a fantasy term (perhaps even with some historical roots) for a wizard or sorts, or a wise man.

by Siberys
So why did you choose to become who you are on this site?
Well, the name Siberys comes from a tabletop game campaign setting, Eberron. A Siberys Ring is a circular storm that rains down not only rain itself, but meteorites named Shards of Siberys. So, as it is a perfect ring, I always thought of it as an "eye of the storm" type thing where the closer you get to the ring the more hectic things become, but in the center, it's almost pure serenity.
I find that this place and outside life itself has a relation to this. Outside life is full of wondrous things, but the further you go in it the more changes to expect, and the higher chance you'll hit a rougher part of the storm. But here, on gamebanshee, it's sort of your getaway of the storm itself, hell even just the internet itself is kind of like that.
Kind of a stretch, but philosophically, I think I made sense.
Do you have alter egos?
No. I act the exact same as I do on the outside life. So an alias and a new personality just suited for the internet would be pointless. Besides, people I meet on the internet are usually hundreds or thousands of miles away and I'll more than likely never actually see them, so why create an alter ego just to relate to them if not impress them?

When I first came to GB I was an arrogant person. I thought my character on Morrowind was so kick ass being the leader of the Mages guild and House Telvanni I went with Magelord648 for I must have been the lord of all mages. A couple of weeks at GB made me realise a bad I really was. The 648 is my web identification. I use it everywhere. Morrowind related I'm Magelord and everything else I'm either MR648 or Cal648. The only place I'm not known as a 648 is the Nexus where I am Mlah. (I had my name changed to Ml because that's what everyone calls me and then someone started calling me Mlah so I went with that.)
