Whilst everyone is slating Barbarians, they aren't that bad, you're quick (cover the gap to mages and hit them fast) and you have resistances to certain types of damage (crushing, slashing etc.) that get higher as you get better. The only major downside is not being able to wear plate mail, but there are some good chains. I got an armour class of -4 (two weapon style) when halfway through SoA, and you have high hit points to soak up the damage.

As for what stinks.....archer, ranged weapons are not very hard hitting, and having a high AC and not being able to specialise in melee weapons is a downer.

I think it has to be BeastMaster, i.e. BM's. Simply a combination of powerful abilities being removed, and weak ones taking their place.

At higher levels, everything pales to equipment, i.e. an extra attack, or an extra resistance to charm is nothing if you are weilding one of the nastier weapons.

BeastMasters can't wield metal weapons, or wear metal armor. They are without doubt the worst melee class; high AC, not great weapon choices, etc. As far as special BM abilities goes... it reeks. I gave up wearing plate/using swords for 2 Brown bears!??

You can solo with them, they are not completely lame. But it's a challenge.

Every other class at least has a serious advantage, like Wizard Slayer. MR is GOOD. Brown Bears... are NOT good.

Two,

Minor nit: MR is great *IF* you have a lot of it. I find that 50% is my dividing line. If it is less than 50%, then I have to play as though my MR didn't exist at all....it is just a last-ditch thing to keep me from getting gacked with spells.

OTOH, an MR of more than 50% starts to mean something.... When *most* magic bounces from you, that starts to really be effective and changes your power level considerably.

The problem is that the Wizard Slayer has *pathetic* MR (1% per level up to 20th IIRC) all the way though SoA....and he can NOT use most magic items including potions.

Gah! I still think that the Wizard Slayer is weak. IMO if you want to be a Mage-Killer, then be an Inquisitor.
