Forgotten hope 2! Now in Europe!
It really is great. If you like WW 2, realisme and tactical battles (like in brothers in arms), this game is for you.

A shame though that they didn't include the ability to let you reload the garand.

Currently playing Shaiya (MMO) and the demo of Avatar: The Game (no relation to the Avatar cartoon), which I have read that it is a tie-in to the movie of the same name directed by James Cameron.

Regarding Avatar: The Game demo, I liked the art direction on the environment and the monsters inhabiting the forest. The Dunia Engine, which powered Far Cry 2, really did a superb job in rendering them. Character models, on the other hand, is decent, but nothing spectacular. There is a wealth of graphical options, which is not bad for a console-port. Performance-wise, it is smooth for most of the game aside from the occasional slowdown in hectic battles between your squadmates and the Navi/monsters.

As for the gameplay, it plays like your average console-centric run-and-gun shooter (a.k.a. Lost Planet) where you gain XP after killing enemies and shooting the wildlife. Once you level up, you are decked out with better weapons and armour automatically.

Haven't heard of Shaiya yet, Des. What's your opinion on that?

A pretty okay 3D MMORPG. Technically, it is stable with some random minor bugs. Gameplay-wise, you level up pretty easily in the earlier levels, thanks to a myriad of quests at this stage, but once you reach level 20, you'll have to grind a lot in order to level up because there are very few quests by then.

Character creation is pretty limited, just like any other free MMO, but the difference is that you are allowed to choose the four difficulty modes you want to play in: Easy, Normal, Hard, Ultimate. From the official site:
 • Easy - This mode should only be played by those who have no experience playing MMORPGs. Level cap is 30, experience gain is 2x, and no special skills are available.
 • Normal - This mode is for players who have some experiences with MMORPGs. Players must reach level 40 in Normal mode before Hard mode will be made available.
 • Hard - Level requirements are much harder in this mode, but Status and Skill Bonuses are increased. Players who reach level 40 in Hard mode will unlock Ultimate mode.
 • Ultimate - Level requirements are the same as in Hard mode, but Status and Skill bonuses are increased and players can use exclusive items, skills, spells, and bonuses only available to Ultimate characters. WARNING!!! Characters who die in Ultimate mode will be deleted if not resurrected within 3 minutes. This mode is only for those players looking for the Ultimate experience.
As for me, I chose the Normal mode. ;)

My opinions are based on roughly 3 weeks of playing this game and I am currently at level 26.

Hmm.. seems like pretty much the usual deal with the available classes, ability wise. You got your standard archer, fighter, priest, etc. I mostly want to create something unique in an MMO, so I think I'll pass.

Ragnarok Online, The one MMO I would play from time to time has recently adopted a new stat/ability/combat system that has made its inner workings much, much more generic and WOW-like.

I'm gonna miss the build-planning. It was the best part of the game.

I've been playing Left 4 Dead 2 and it's pretty great. I never played the original, so the whole concept is new to me and I'm loving it. Plenty of different modes to keep you entertained, some requiring over an hour to complete, others just a few minutes.

Gave up on Shaiya. Pretty damn repetitive. Now, I'm just replaying CoD 4: Modern Warfare and GTA IV.

Apart from Dragon Age, I've been playing Far Cry 2 and Puzzle Quest on the Nintendo DS. Always carry a portable game around.

Well, I'm chronically restarting DA:O and am on my 20th something character, but I've been thinking of looking closer at Assassins Creed 2 or something on the side right now.

Privateer on DosBox. :D

Anyone remember that game? It's a shame that there aren't many games like it around anymore besides FreeLancer (which I've never played).

Either way, it's a classic and it's more open-ended then many games today I would say.

Yeah - the "Space Sims" is pretty much a dead genre much to my own annoyances. I've spend many many hours with the likes of Privateer, Wing Commander, StarLancer and so on.......
I was even working on building up an older computer to play them on again, but my project sort of stranded - need some switch boxes, but it is too fast for some of those games.

I know what you mean. I also recently played both Wing Commander 1 and 2 on DosBox so that sucked me in big time. It kind of sucks that it's so hard to get a machine that can play them. For me, because of my lack of computer knowledge, emulation is the best way to go.

I was actually thinking of having a look for StarLancer; what did you think of it?

StarLancer is very fun and lend itself very well to multiplayer. It isn't as "deep" (if you can say that about the soap-stories around the missions) as Wing Commander, but I enjoyed it both in single player and multiplayer back in the days.

Sounds alright. If I liked the Wing Commander 2 story, would I like StarLancer's story?

I find it really hard to play games that don't at least have some semblance of a story, so if it's just a space combat game without much point in single player (ie, X-Wing vs Tie Fighter), I probably wouldn't be as interested.

I found Starlancer's story on par with some Wingcommanders, and very much worth it on its own.
