“Wait a minute,” Gwalchmai suddenly said to Aegis, “You are wounded? Can I help with healing?” Gwalchmai felt badly that he hadn’t noticed Aegis’ wounds or even that he was in the room. He cast what spells he could for Aegis, and T’lainya also hurried over to assist.

He turned back to Mysteria, and was relieved to hear that she would be willing to join them. She still seemed apprehensive about her wild magic, and struggled to think of some reassuring words. “You know,” he began tentatively, “Some of us have had a bit of experience with wild magic. I myself have been known to conjure strange little ‘Christmas’ gnomes on occasion. ( :D ) You might want to talk to T’lainya sometime and pick her brain. She has some familiarity with wild magic. Ask her about the Syrup of D’sney” ( :D ) He gave her a quick bear hug, hoping he wasn’t being too presumptive.

Seeing that Aegis was fully healed, he showed the way to the western tower of the keep. The stairs ended in a pair of heavy wooden doors set into the ceiling. Gwalchmai pushed them open and clambered onto the roof. The open roof of the tower was the highest part of the keep. It was square, measuring a good 100 feet (30 metres) across and was surrounded by a chest-high, crenulated wall. Situated in the center of the western wall was the altar where the Dusk Ritual would be performed.

Aegis walked around the circumference of the tower roof, peering over the edge. To the north and west, the walls dropped away to the ground, some 50 feet below. The inner courtyard of the keep lay to the north, while open fields lay to the west. Sunsets would clearly be quite spectacular from that vantage. The bulk of the keep lay to the east of the tower, with Vivien’s rooftop garden extending out from the east tower wall; only about 10 feet below. “A jumpable distance,” Aegis thought, “In case the battle needs to be carried away from the tower.” The tower was not so easily descended to the south, where the roofline of the keep was further down and slanted.

“Okay,” Gwalchmai said, “It looks like we still have about a half an hour before the Dusk Ritual. I’ll leave you to orient yourself, and go round up the others.” He then returned to the kitchen.

Yshania was concerned as Dragon Wench fled the kitchen...she toyed with the idea of following her, but decided that space may be a good thing...they had an intense night ahead of them. She drunk long from the claret, and politely refused T'lainya's offer of a refill 'you have it' she smiled benevolently 'I think I have had my share...and at this rate I may end up singing again!' They laughed, grateful for it's alien sound....

She did not know what to make of Gwalchmai's response to her suggestion of invisibility...had she been too simple? Had she missed something? He had left the kitchen with the ranger, she would ask him when he returned...this was not the time for confusion or breakdown in communication...

Yshania lost herself in thought, listening to the gentle murmerings in the kitchen. T'lainya, she noticed, was looking equally pensive. Yshania was wondering whether she should go and look for Dragon Wench when Gwalchmai re-entered the kitchen, looking edgy and serious. 'May I speak with you Gwalchmai?' she asked, rising from her seat....

Mysteria thoughtfully watched Gwally disappear, his hug had felt ... good? It had been a long time since anybody had hugged her ...

How long indeed had it been since she had met so many friendly people? Since sheßd arrived at the keep ... Georgi! She'd completely forgotten about her and that cat-creature!

But now wasn't really the time to go off chasing strange creatures, all the more because she'd agreed to help at the ritual. Also, she had the strange feeling that this tunnel might lead to much more than they'd expect.

Then, something else came back to her mind. She'd left that black dagger somewhere in here ... After some rummaging, she found it on a shelf and pocketed it. She had a bad feeling about letting it lie around unwatched, though she felt little more comfortable about carrying it around. She'd have to talk to T'Lainya about this, and perhaps ask her about that ... what was it called? ... Syrup of D'sney?

Half an hour, Gwalchmai had said. At least, that was enough for her to check on the precarious barricade she'd made at the tunnel, it wouldn't take long. Swiftly leaving the room, she made her way to the tunnel and the pile of furniture at the entrance. As soon as they approched it, Fang growled, the foul scent of the creature was apparently still strong.

She hesitated, then resolved to take just a quick look at what lay behind. She lighted a torch they'd forgotten during their earlier investigations and moved a few pieces of the barricade, so she was able to squeeze through.

Loosening her sword in it's sheath, she swiftly followed Fang down a flight of stairs. On her guard, she peered around the last corner and into a dusty room smelling of mold. The creature's tracks could clearly be seen in the dust, running to length of the room and disappearing into the opposite wall.

Nothing dangerous was in sight, so she entered the room cautiously and then quickly searched the wall where the tracks stopped. There had to be a secret door there, but she was unable to find it.

Abandoning her useless search, she quickly walked back to the tunnel entrance and put the barricade back in place. She'd have to tell the others about this, but first the ritual.

After some searching, she found the way up to the top of the tower and joined Aegis. As the other ranger before, she took a quick look around, then settled down on the crennelation to the east and checked on her arrows, waiting for the others to arrive as the sun slowly crept nearer to the horizon.

They wondered outside into the hall...Yshania concerned that her suggestion may have been premature...offered without due consideration of any other options that might be available.

'I suggested Invisibility...we could always use it as a back up. I am not familiar with most mage spells, but I do have one or two at my disposal, and we have DW, Vivien and Jenna, and probably Simbul if she deigns to show. We also have between you T'lainya and I, many priest protection spells...but since we do not know what we will be facing, it is harder to....'

He smiled at her, stopping her short...'that was not my intention, to question your stance' he said. 'I, too, had not considered mage spells, I was wondering out loud of the knowledge I have...'

'You take too much on yourself' Yshania replied quietly 'and it is easy to become introspective when the future is so unsure...and we don't know who or what we are up against, or who will ally our cause. I will do what I can, where I can...'

'Thank you' he smiled. He paused before adding 'Would performing a ritual to a sun god whilst invisible appear superficial and insincere?'

She gave this some thought before offering 'My feelings are that it is the spirit and intention, not the physical presence' She smiled at him...searching his face for a response....

“I’m sure you’re right,” Gwalchmai said, then thought to himself, “Besides, Amaunator is a dead sun god. What would he care if I am invisible?” Gwalchmai wished that he had thought of invisibility himself and sooner. That might have saved him some painful trouble against the Beholder earlier. Again he was reminded that Avenger Druids had access to spells that he was not used to. Sometimes he wondered about the wisdom of his chosen life. Oh, well.

Aloud, he said, “Let’s plan on it, if you are willing to expend one of your spells on me. I think it’s a good plan.” He hoped that he wouldn’t trip on anything while invisible. He was worried about not being able to see his own feet.

He gave Yshania a quick hug (he was starting to feel like Vivien with all the hugging he was doing), and the two of them walked back into the kitchen.

Harry stumbled through the open door into the kitchen and caught his balance before he crashed into the table then threw a sharp glance at the mage who followed him into the room with a cheeky grin on her face.
Harry looked around seeing a range of expressions from guarded worry/fear through to a slightly intoxicated smile from Ysh, then he introduced the woman with him to the group quickly as Imoen.
"What's going on?" was his first question.

A lenghty explanation

Terrified? , Thantor quipped to Flanders. I'm not certain I follow.

"Do you have time for a history lesson.", Flanders spoke, severing the telepathic link.

"Yes.", answered Thantor, "It would appear we have a little time, however, I must ask how it was you came to join in this battle. Surely, you weren't conjured along with the hulks and the mind flayers?"

"No, I was not, and I'll answer your question. Let's start by going back in time...say a couple of thousand years."

So, Flanders began giving Thantor a condensed version of his history coupled with more complete knowledge on the origins of vampires and vampirism. He spoke with pride regarding his origins and his nobility amongst the high elves and told him of the prophecy that would forsake him to live his life with the drow in the underdark. "Two hundred and a half years below the surface spent with the most pathetic race in all of Faerun. The prophecy never spoke of how I would become exiled from my people for the rest of my existence. And to think on the night I had found my freedom, I was bestowed with a curse far worse than the drow could ever impose."

Flanders began relaying a history of the vampires to Thantor to help him understand his current plight. "Yes, Thantor, the first vampire was a drow priestess named Uther Pn'dragan. She saught the ability to walk the surface during the day for herself and all her kind. She practised dark unexplored magics and experimented with undead. It's kind of ironic the one thing she saught to gain became something that would prove ultimately fatal."

He continued to explain Uther's exile to the surface and how she learned to spread her curse with her bite. "As they grew in number, the orders of Torm, Helm, and Lathander formed the high order of COMM :D , a group of elite paladins and priests trained to combat these beasts." Flanders went on to tell of the battles throughout the centuries eventually leading to the extingushing of Uther herself. "Her direct descendents, those she had bitten herself, numbered only six at the time of her destruction, all were male. Uther has spoken to the six over the years from the nether world. Now, they mostly fight amongst each other seeking her approval. How fitting since they can all trace their lineage to a drow."

"This is fascinating", exclaimed Thantor. "How is it you know so much when the origin of vampires has forever remained a mystery."

"The order of the high COMM recorded all they learned of Uther and her minions in sacred texts. They were chronicled by the undead hunter, Weasel :D , and the high priest of Helm, Maharlika :D . They were well guarded and the information kept very private. The texts were lost to Uther, who destroyed them, when she slayed the dynamic duo. That may explain why their origins still remain a mystery."

"So how is you are privy to this information?", Thantor asked again.

"Uther...has been communicating...with me.", Flanders hesitantly replied.

That statment left a look of shock and bewilderment on Thantor's face.

Flanders continued, "Uther has hopes of returning to Faerun. Since all of her direct descendents are male, she is unable to return in any of their forms. She requires a female form to inhabit. For centuries, the six have been warring for Uther's favor and presenting her with female subjects, a queen if you will, that Uther's spirit may possess. They have all failed to provide a fitting subject. It seems now, Uther believes I can provide her a queen."

"But if you are not a direct descendent, why has she chosen you?", inquired Thantor.

"Why do you think the six are terrified of me." Flanders rhetorically quipped. "She has imbued mighty powers upon me, however, my psionic ability allows to create mental towers that keep out her beguilling requests."

"Has she chosen a host for you to infect?", pressed Thantor.

Flanders paused, and attmepted to dodge the question. He sent Rod and Todd back to the astral plane, leaving the figurines outside of his globe of deep night. "Please, take the figurines and give them to the woman who conjured the fire elemental. They took a strong liking to her, and they no longer trust or enjoy my company."

"Has she chosen a host for you to infect?", Thantor requested again and began searching the mind of Flanders.

Flanders pushed him out. "Do not.", he stated. "Go back and tell your group what you have learned. I have no desire to provide Uther with a queen. My vampirism must be reversed or I must be destroyed. I would prefer the former, though I do not the possess the means. I am requesting your help. I must return underground and construct a tower of iron will. No doubt Uther is aware I've had a busy day and she will press hard on me this evening. I must be ready. I will keep a mental channel for you to reach me. I won't be too far. Just reach out and call."

With that, Flanders crawled back into the hole from which he emerged.

Thantor kneeled to scoop up the two figurines and turning, gave a daunting look towards the keep.

Note: This can certainly be edited. It's all pretty heavy but I was on a roll and decided to spill most of the beans at once. I hope I'm not coming off as too selfish by injecting such an intricate plot surrounding my character to your story line. also, I've left a lot of beer in the discussion thread as you must all be parched from reading this. cheers. :D

Being shoved unceremoniously back into the room, Yshania turned to see Harry wearing a sheepish grin. Before she could relay her surprise, he rightened himself and introduced his companion. Turning and politely offering her hand, Yshania was stunned to see an old acquaintance standing in the doorway...

'By the gods!' she exclaimed 'Immy! How are you? and however did you come to find this place? How is our old friend Sarevok?' (: D )

Harry immediately clapped his hands to his ears as Ysh started shrillly(sp?) shrieking in drunken excitement when she recongised Imoen and everyone in the room looked slightly uncomfortable. :D :p

Everyone in the room felt uncomfortable at Harry’s sudden appearance. For the ones who knew him, the last time they had seen him he had been enthralled to the Shadow Master as a minion. Gwalchmai rested his hand on the pommel of his sword. “Harry. I think you should refrain from sudden movements until you can prove your good intentions.”

"May I?" With a look of acceptance Harry motioned to his weapons then the table. A nod was offered in response so he slowly slid his swords from their scabbards and placed them on the table along with his 2 daggers. Then folding his arms over his chest and taking 2 steps away from the table he enquired "Now what?".

T'lainya looked unhappy at the confrontation. She held up a hand. "May I?"
She concentrated briefly as the detect evil spell went into effect. "It's all right, he seems to be back to normal." The priestess smiled at Harry and Gwally and motioned for Harry to retrieve his weapons.

Shrill? Ysh?

Ysh cleared her throat..she hated it when that tried to happen, she was incapable of even reaching those notes and only ever attempted them unwittingly, and when she was nervous....

Gwally challenged Harry's presence, his look menacing and untrusting. Ysh had no idea of where Gwalchmai's concern may have come from...Imoen shifted uncomfortably....

BS was taking in the confrontation, somewhat at a loss as to what was going on. His ears streained as he listened, and he heard Imoen say something under her breath about Gwally being a queer fellow. :p

Recalling how the druid had reacted earlier when he had walked in on BS's morning exercises, he wondered if he didn't agree with that statement. :D  You would have thought Gwally didn't know advanced fighting techniques from the way he had stared at BS.

He went back to his drink.

At T'lainya's nod, Gwalchmai released his grip on his sword and clasped Harry's hand in welcome. "Good to have you back, my friend! I'm sure you have many adventures to tell us about, particularly how you managed to find your self in the company of Ms. Imoen, but unfortunately, now may not be the best time." He quickly explained about the recent events at the keep, while wondering why Bloodstalker kept looking at him in that funny way.

He saw two figures emerge onto the roof of the tower. Angorroc couldn’t make out which of the Dark Flames they were, for could not allow his wizard eye to move any closer lest it be detected. The figures scouted the roof for a moment, then one figure left. The other figure continued scouting, then suddenly disappeared, apparently hiding himself. Eventually, another figure also emerged but quickly went into hiding. Angorroc gently nudged his mate awake. “I see movement on the tower. We must make ready.” She was instantly alert, her large eyes bright.

Turning, he raised his voice and spoke to their companion, “It is nearly time.”

“At laaaasst,” it said in a low, hoarse voice that sounded like stale air escaping from a sepulcher. “I yeaarn for the killll.”

“Soon, you will have your chance. Soon.”

As they shook hands emotions flashed across Harry's face : fear, pain, shame and rage as he remembered what had happened.
"I don't think I'd call them adventures as such but they are best left for another time and place as you say." Harry said softly
Nodding in gratitude to T'lainya for her part in defusing the confrontation, Harry snatched up his weapons and slammed them back into their scabbards suddenly angry at the memories "I want in on any retribution if that's ok." he hissed through clenched teeth.
After a few moments in a calmer state of mind, "Where to now?, Imoen and I wouldn't mind helping out." This was confirmed by a nod from the thief/mage standing off to one side of the room.

Everyone had suddenly looked at Harry as he came crashing through the door. All eyes were on him as he pulled out his weapons but an audible sigh of relief was heard as he layed his weapons on the table.

Nippy rubbed the pommel of his fire blade. A warm feeling came over his body and the recent battles exertions lessened the tension in his body. His shoulders relaxed and the weight in his arms dropped. He walked out of the kitchen through the back door, not caring of anyone noticed his exit.

He walked out to the front of the keep and knelt down, his legs crossed and the warm beams of sunlight shone through the sparse cloud and onto his face. The warmth comforted him, he always enjoyed the feeling before dusk, the sun giving it's last scraps of energy, shining out as it fell beyond sight. He smiled and closed his eyes, feeling the warmth and comfort grow within his body.

He meditated, focusing on strengthening his body, keeping calm and expelling any doubt from his body.

His meditation complete, he kicked his legs up and stood, letting his swords drop onto the lush grass. He kicked off his boots and let drop his armour. He stood with his shirt and trousers, barefooted feeling the grass, the earth and pure existence rush through him.

He began making stretching movements, flexing his arms, keeping his shoulders loose, stretching every fibre of his being, keeping himself warm for what would be a monumental battle, soon to be started.

His warm up finished he began going through what his teachers had given him, the techniques that he used to use, but had been neglected. It became second nature, the speed increasing, his arms a blur as he blocked an imaginary sword thrust and retaliated with a vicious chop into the throat, he completed one more kata and moved on to another keeping the movements fluid and graceful, changing fighting styles for every different situation, going from a mob attacking a single man to one on one combat. He was fluid, he was quick and he was ready...

He breathed out and finished his preparations. His body hardened, strong against blows he eschewed his armour, he would go back to his roots. He sheathed his swords and walked back into the keep. Heading straight for the shrine in his room. He knelt down and prayed for deliverance and strength in this battle.

Feeling somewhat uneasy in his seat, BS pondered what he should do till the time for the ritual. He wasn't sure what was going to happen, but he found himself growing restless. He overheard talk of preperations, likely involving some kind of spells as part of the process. The idea appealed little to him, and he decided to excuse himself quietly from the room before someone tried to cast some kind of protection on him.

He left the room and walked up to the tower where Aegis and Mysteria were waiting. He heard a low growl as he approached, and smiled as it stopped when fang recognized him.

He went to the edge and looked out across the landscape. The sun was making it's way slowly towards the horizen, and he took a deep breath, enjoying the calm of the moment. The wind blew over his body, settling his mind somewhat.

"Beautiful, isn't it?", he spoke aloud to his companions, not really wanting to believe that such a lovely night could hold such danger. But the stark reality of the situation bit into him more coldly that the evening air could. If the events of the day so far were any indication, there would be enough fighting in the next couple hours or so.
