Yes. Ive heard OF this song, though Ive never heard the song itself. I have only heard a few Dire Straits songs, surprisingly. Of all the music research I do, and all the hours Ive listened to 80's music, I have only caught 3 Dire Straits songs.

Now what kind of an influence did British and American artists have on NZ in the 80's? I know there were lots of Australian artists in that era, and Im sure they had a larger impact on NZ rather than the American/British artists. Am I right?

The 80's and early 90's saw a lot of outstanding New Zealand music, most notably Crowded House, Dave Dobbyn, the one-hit-wonder from The Dudes (best beer drinking song in existence, I'll try and find a link), When The Cat's Away and Split Enz (although they were more from the 70's).

Tim and Neil Finn (Crowded House) and Dave Dobbyn are still recording too.

Congrats Flibbs! I knew we could make a SPAMmer out of you. Dont take offense that I wont start a party thread for you. I mean we just finished parties for Scayde's 1k, my 5k, Gamebanshee's 2 years, and AC's b-day. There are a lot of parties out there, but here, have a free keg that I stole from the Flop House.

You know, dont laugh, but I really like Crowded House, and got one of their CD's with the song "Dont Dream its Over". Ive heard of the Dudes, but are unaware of what their hit is. Split Enz-now I know Crowded house was created from them, but I dont like their stuff as much. I do have a CD with their song, "I Got You" which is a decent song, and in fact, I saw the video for that song earlier today.

But thats generally good stuff you mentioned. My missing brother liked Split Enz a lot. Along with Crowded House and REM. Thats really where I got a taste for the 80's music, and my taste for it gradually spread like an epidemic, and now I like most 80's music and new wave.

Ha! We'd end up needing to create a new forum for parties if a thread was started for each event, so none taken. Besides, in 9 days another event occurs of much greater significance.

The Dudes are known for "Bliss", basically it's about drinking beer and nothing else. Crowded House are the second best band to come out of NZ, outdone only by Spilt Enz.

And I know what youre talking about. I wonder if Mah or I will start that B-day thread. Its always one of us.

Split Enz is considered as a 1-hit wonder here. They never charted. "I Got You" was their lone hit here and it only hit #55 on the American charts. "Dont Dream its Over" hit #12 here in the states and they had further hits in the 90's. Split Enz almost got another hit in "6 months in a leaky boat" but that hit somewhere around #105 in the charts. So it isnt considered a hit by the studies. But the billboard doesnt declare how successful a band is, nor a song. Memorable songs such as "Turning Japanese" and "I Melt With You" didnt even touch the top 75 in the charts, but those songs are still played and recognized, because they had a larger impact. And groups/people like Jimi Hendrix and The Greatful Dead didnt have more than 2 hits, but they are bigger than their hits. Same thing goes with the Talking Heads. They had 3 top 40 hits, but they are far better than that.

Just a bit of my musical philosophy regarding the billboard 101.

A different story here. Most of those songs were #1 at some point. I suppose you get that though, each country loyal to their own artists.

It has to deal with fan-base, and how well each group imports and exports their stuff. I mean Spandau Ballet had over 15 hits in the UK, they had only one hit over here. They didnt import well so they suffered in the charts. Same thing can be said about Big Country, a-ha, aswell as many more. Some groups are the opposite. Wang Chung originated in England, and had 2 hits over there, but had a much higher fan base in the States, and both hits rose to higher ground here and I believe they mustered a 3rd hit here aswell. And Alphaville originated in Germany, but had no hits there. They managed to get to number 8 in the UK charts with "Big in Japan".

So it deals with fan base and import and export, if youre not popular in your own country, transport the act to another country and if youre popular in your country, do the best you can to spread your musical voice while maintaining the strength in your home country.

My posts are becoming larger and larger by the minute. It seems like as I grow more tired, my posts become larger. Does that make sense?

Yeah. As is the case of Sunday nights. Homework.....Well I have to do statistics homework before tomorrow, but Ive still got 12 hours to do it. So Ill wait to do until 11.5 of those hours pass.
