Spain was rewarded with a total of 13 offside this game. What i think about it is not that Ireland plays the offside trap but the Spanish players push it to the limit. From all these offside none of them was more than half a meter long.

As for the game itself, if Spain wouldn't pass i would blame one person, the Spanish Coach. When the game reached the 80th+ minute Spanish team was without any striker, both Raul and Morientes got out. In other words Spain was in the hands of God for more than 40 minutes. Fortunately for Spain Casigias(sp) was there too today and saved them.
A little unfair for the Irish but they did pretty well.

More bonehead football questions

I have some more questions about penalties and substitutions which stem from the Spain-Ireland match (see my earlier question about three pages back).

How does it work when players are give yellow and red cards?

It is my understanding that when a player is given a yellow card, it is a warning for something worse than a foul, but now meriting ejection; he is also assessed a fine. If a player gets to yellow cards in one game, he is ejected.

If a player gets a red card, he is ejected from the game and suspended from playing in the next game as well as paying a more substantial fine. Players ejected with a red card cannot be replaced, even if a team still has substitutions left for the match.

My questions are these:

If a player is ejected for two yellow cards, can he be replaced in the lineup?

If a player gets one yellow card in Game X, and gets a second yellow card in Game Y, is he ejected from the second game (for which he has one yellow card, but two for the tournament)?

Does a team get additional subsitutions in overtime periods?

If a player runs the risk of getting two yellow cards in two consecutive matches then he will miss the next game. He can still finish playing the game Y in which he got the yellow card but will have to be replaced in the very next match.

As for getting a red card, the way it works is that a player gets reprimanded for doing something careless with a yellow card, this may be for a one off highly dangerous tackle or for his reckless behaivour which the referee believes won't improve as time goes on. If the player does get in trouble once again, he gets another yellow card which is practically a red card.

So pretty much two yellow cards in one match equals a red card.

Whilst two yellow cards in two consecutive matches means the player recieves the same punishment (one match suspension).

exactly, beckham for example was absolutely petrified, everybody thinks that when they get a penalty it's 99% sure goal, but what they don't know is that the shooter knows that people think that way and everyone expects him to score. i myself don't shoot penalties in games, but my friend who practises them everyday can shoot it in the corners with both feets, missed 3 penalties out of 5 last year, just because he was under too much pressure, it is more than difficult to put it in, if you've missed it before and everyone puts their fate in you, one needs to be extremely cool headed, hierro is a great example of that, the guy didn't even blink, unlike the young chaps of the emerald island who didn't have what it takes unfortunately...

The Game was only 1-0 when the American put obviously the hands on the ball, if was not by the t-shirt I would thought that was the Gkeeper.
Was to be a penalty. That would certanly change the course of the game.

No the subsitutions are always three.

About Mexico-USA game i only know the score anyone seen it? Was it good?

I saw the score and i was shocked out of my seat. What the americans paying mexico in return for the match?

Mexico were poor and the US were slightly less poor The game was really quite boring. The interesting thing to note; this is not the first time that the US have beaten Mexico, in fact they usually do fairly well against Mexico. Did the commentators now this?? what do you think

I'm glad they won, but maybe I would have chosen Sweden, if only for that shot of Svensson, really, one of the things that give sense to a world cup.....

Radio 5 Live commentators knew this, Mexico have not beaten the US in 9 games or so, so Mexico were in fact the underdogs mentally...

More of us don't speak Spanish, but were able to draw conclusions on the content. If we have misinterpreted, please let us know.

...you guys just beat me to it. Besides, Spanish isn't that truly difficult to understand in terms of contextual clues... not to mention the fact that a lot of us SYMians are really smart people.

I was however, almost tempted to answer him in Spanish, but then again, I'd better not...

...coz doing so (and it's not the use of Spanish per se) would put me down his(?) level, as far as his manners are concerned.

BTW, there is something so magical and endearing with the way the Senegal team behave themselves during the game.

As Tammy said, two yellows equal one red. If a player is shown a second yellow in the same game, he will be sent off and cannot be replaced in that game. Therefore his team will be down to ten men. In the game he is subsequently banned from, however, he can be replaced.

Two separate yellows over two games, still count as a red in respect that he will have a one match ban, but he will be able to continue the second game. It is two yellows or one red in one game that sees a player sent off. It is two yellows over a couple of games, or one red in one game that will have the player a one match ban.

No. Only three substitutes, regardless of game length.

I agree! I have enjoyed their football - it might be naiive on occasion, but they are so fast! and their striker Diouf (?) is very impressive

Loved that goal he made! It was like an Allen Iverson-crossover (of the NBA Philadelphia 76ers) on his way to the basket amids a handful of defenders.

To make that feint then follow it up immediately with a powerful thrust is truly impressive.

Good game, but IMO the scoreline was flattering. Roll on Friday - it should be a great game!
