I would get down to the bone and then i couldnt do it any more so I would die of infection

You are choosing between your arm and your life. *shrugs* I think I'd have to be in that kind of situation to know what I'd do. Exhaust any and all other options first.

Cutting through bone with a pocket knife would be a lot of work.

Maybe he should stay away from snowy, rocky places. So no hiking or mountaineering. :p
