If you remember Houston in the sixties, it is about on par, however the downtown area still holds much of the old town charm, much like San Antonio, the rapid growth has all been out in the burbs, with numerous bedroom communities springing up all in the hill country. Hell, I saw pictues of Richard Garriott and his syncop...er, working crew doing RPG sessions in the scrub brush and on a very nice, nearby lake.
Matter of fact, I remember going to that lake another time, with some friends. Can't remember it's name, though. Probably been drained to make way for a suburb.

.....you are right, much of the old character is gone, but still, for a city of it's size, it is a wonderful place, and the music scene is still among the hottest in the Southwest
